According to Anelise Lara, Director of Refining and Gas at Petrobras, during a live event of the Brazilian Automotive Engineering Association held last night (06/23), Brazil will produce gasoline with quality similar to the fuel sold in Europe and the USA in the next semester. Petrobras Will Conduct Tests for Renewable Diesel in Paraná

The director also stated that the economic feasibility of renewable diesel — a technology patented by Petrobras that allows for the production of the derivative from the coprocessing of oil with vegetable oils at refineries — will depend on the regulation of the new product.

Petrobras, along with ANP, hopes that the commercialization of green diesel, which will begin to be tested at the Repar refinery in Araucária (PR) starting in July, can generate carbon credits (Cbios) — an instrument of the federal RenovaBio program for the offsetting of greenhouse gas emissions. Each CBio corresponds to the reduction of emissions of 1 ton of carbon resulting from the substitution of fossil fuel consumption with renewable sources.

“For [green diesel and aviation bio-kerosene] to be economically viable, they need to be regulated. This is the most relevant point for us to proceed with the production of green diesel,” the executive stated during the online event.

The RenovaBio sets emission targets for each fuel distributor, which must acquire CBios from renewable fuel producers.
