With Rising Demand in the Country, Petrobras Considers Returning to Ethanol and Increasing Biodiesel Production, Says CEO

Petrobras is studying to strengthen its performance in renewable fuels, and according to President Magda Chambriard, the company is already evaluating new investments in ethanol, biodiesel, and sources such as solar, wind, and hydrogen.

The statement was made on Monday (24), during the Eloos event organized by Itatiaia in partnership with CNN Brasil, and anticipates strategic moves to keep up with the growth of the country’s energy demand.

The executive explained what is being discussed (the expansion of clean sources).

Who is leading the process (the Petrobras management), when the announcement occurred (this Monday, 24).

Where it was communicated (Eloos event).

How the state-owned company plans to advance (with research, investments, and resuming renewable fuels).

Why this step has become urgent (to maintain relevance and keep pace with the growth of energy consumption in Brazil).

Thus, the state-owned company seeks to reposition itself in a global scenario that demands energy transition while trying to preserve its leadership in the domestic market.

And, as the CEO emphasized, the long-term strategy precisely involves less polluting options in line with the global movement for sustainability.

Brazil’s Energy Demand Requires Petrobras Expansion

To sustain the country’s economic and population growth, Magda Chambriard highlighted that the Brazilian energy matrix will need to take a significant leap in the coming decades.

According to her, it will be inevitable to expand the supply of primary energy to meet the growing demand.

The president recalled that “Petrobras supplies 31% of all primary energy generated in Brazil,” reaffirming the crucial role of the state-owned company in national supply.

To maintain that same strategic weight in the future, the company will have to keep pace with the country’s expansion.

She also explained that increasing the volume of primary energy by at least 60% by 2050 is a challenge that has already been calculated internally.

Therefore, Petrobras considers returning to ethanol and increasing biodiesel production, says CEO | CNN Brasil a set of initiatives that strengthens the transition and diversifies the matrix.

Ethanol and Biodiesel Come Back to the Strategic Radar

Among the prioritized fronts, returning to ethanol and advancing biodiesel production appear as immediate pathways.

Magda Chambriard states that the state-owned company is reevaluating its presence in these segments, which had more prominence in the past.

During her speech, the executive reinforced:
“We are strongly considering returning to ethanol, we will be increasing biodiesel production… ”

The signaling shows that Petrobras considers returning to ethanol and increasing biodiesel production, says CEO | CNN Brasil not as an isolated idea, but as a central component of the energy transition strategy.

This could reposition the company in markets where renewable solutions have gained strength, especially in a country that is a leader in biofuel production.

Wind, Solar, and Hydrogen Enter an Intensification Phase

In addition to biofuels, Petrobras is also expanding studies and projects in wind, solar, and other emerging sources.

However, Magda Chambriard acknowledges that these sectors still require significant investments.

The executive stated:
“We will further exacerbate our investments in wind, solar, hydrogen, etc.”

In her speech, she highlighted that there are ongoing projects, but many of them still have high costs.

Even so, Petrobras considers returning to ethanol and increasing biodiesel production, says CEO | CNN Brasil, precisely because it understands that it is necessary to balance the short term with innovations that will bring returns in the medium and long term.

Energy Transition Guided by Sustainability and Economic Relevance

For Petrobras, the equation of energy transition needs to reconcile innovation, sustainability, and competitiveness.

Thus, the company seeks to enhance its relevance in the global market while meeting environmental commitments and societal demands.

Chambriard emphasized that Petrobras intends to “grow with Brazil” until 2050, keeping pace with the increase in energy demand and maintaining its 31% share in national generation.
