Currently, the ships that the Santos port can receive are up to 340 meters long and have a capacity of about 9,000 TEU. With the authorization, considering a container ship (new Panamax) measuring 366 meters in length and 52 meters in width, the capacity can be increased to 14,000 TEU.
Approval Process:
This process also involved the University of São Paulo (USP) and the Piloting Service of the state, which studied and conducted simulations of maneuverability, hydrodynamic interactions, and berthing plans, confirming the viability of a ship of this size in the navigation channel.

The researchers considered the current depth of the channel at 15 meters and the future depth of 17 meters to be adequate for ships with less than 15,000 TEU. BTP (Brazil Terminal Portuário), DP World, and Santos Brasil conducted studies on the maneuverability and feasibility of such ships reaching their terminals.
Cargo Movement:
SPA reported that the authorization expands Santos’ role as a port hub in South America. According to the plan, the Santos port complex is already preparing for the increased transportation of containers, foresees the expansion of the existing terminal, and plans for two additional locations, on the right bank of Saboó, one for port terminals and the other for the inland terminal.
