Discover The Details Of This Agreement That Strengthens The European Presence Of The Aircraft And Boosts International Cooperation

On June 16, 2025, Embraer confirmed the sale of a sixth KC-390 Millennium aircraft to the Portuguese Air Force.
The announcement occurred during the Paris Air Show.
The initial contract, signed in August 2019, called for five units.
Now, Portugal consolidates its position as an operational reference for the model.
The decision demonstrates confidence in the performance of the multi-mission military jet.

European Expansion And Interoperability In The Spotlight

In addition to the new acquisition, the agreement also includes ten additional purchase options, aimed at both NATO countries and other European nations.
Thus, Portugal will act as a strategic facilitator in these future negotiations, which could accelerate the adoption of new buyers to the platform.
In this way, the main objective becomes promoting interoperability among operators of the same aircraft, which ensures greater efficiency.
This will not only provide logistical gains but also a significant reduction in operational costs for all parties involved in the program.
Furthermore, the agreement enhances the efficiency of joint training, which further strengthens the technical preparation of multinational teams.
Finally, this move reinforces international alliances and simultaneously positions Portugal as a central player in European defense integration.

Investment Strengthens The Portuguese Aerospace Industry

In July 2019, the government signed the original contract and established the value of €827 million for the first five aircraft. The manufacturer delivered the first unit in October 2022.
The second was received in June 2024 by the Portuguese Air Force.
Now, with the sixth aircraft, an additional investment of €80 million is estimated.
Additionally, approximately €75 million will be allocated to OGMA. The company integrates and adapts the airframes. The partnership strengthens the local industrial sector. The contract boosts the economy and stimulates national aerospace innovation.

KC-390 Expands The Operational Capacity Of The Air Force

The crew conducts aerial refueling with the aircraft.
Additionally, it performs medical evacuations quickly and safely, ensuring efficiency.
The model can also be used in firefighting and humanitarian missions with different operational profiles.

Since October 2023, Portugal has adopted the model in international operations.
This significantly expanded its military capabilities, especially in joint actions.
Among these operations, the Ocean Sky exercise stands out. The team conducted this training in the Canary Islands, with intense participation of the aircraft.
The aircraft, in turn, transported Black Hawk helicopters received directly from the United States to reinforce strategic actions.
Thus, the new unit will further strengthen the rapid response capacity of the defense forces, especially in emergency contexts.
It will therefore be used across various fronts of the Portuguese air force, contributing to both tactical and humanitarian operations.
