Navy forecast comes true; cyclone formed on the high seas of Rio de Janeiro yesterday, with wind speeds of over 63 km/h

Platforms on alert! Navy warning about formation of cyclone on the high seas in Rio de Janeiro took place at 22 pm yesterday, January 23rd. After winds reach speeds greater than 63 km/h in RJ, Kurumí, which was previously classified as a subtropical depression, is now considered a cyclone or some call it a subtropical storm.

According to the Brazilian Navy, the center of the cyclone is 700 km (377 nautical miles) southeast of Arraial do Cabo, in RJ, moving south.

The Navy also informs that forecasts of strong wind on the coastline between the cities of Arraial do Cabo and Ilhéus, in BA; and also between the cities of Tramandaí, in SC and Santos, SP.

There are many oil platforms installed in the regions mentioned above, leaving oil companies operating in risk areas attentive in order to keep their crew and units safe.

One of them is Shell, which issued the following note to Petronotícias: “The offshore operating units of Shell Brasil (FPSO Espírito Santo and FPSO Fluminense) are aware of this prognosis and are prepared for these adverse weather conditions. Under these conditions, activities on board are constantly evaluated, always prioritizing the safety of the crew and the environment”.

Equinor also issued a note on the situation: "Equinor permanently monitors the weather and sea conditions in the regions where it operates and will take all necessary measures if this occurrence is confirmed".

Ocyan also sent a note: “Ocyan keeps its assets prepared for any eventualities due to changes in weather conditions. The respective technical and safety teams and the entire leadership reinforce, on a daily basis, among other topics, prevention actions on the high seas. Safety is the main value of the company.”

Cyclones or storms subtropical they do not usually cause damage on the ground, because they move towards the high seas, in a southerly direction. However, they can cause massive rainfall on the mainland.

Federal Government bodies made a joint alert, at the beginning of the week, for the possibility of heavy rains in the area that comprises Espírito Santo, Goiás, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, in addition to the Federal District. In the last few hours, the capital of Minas Gerais Belo Horizonte suffered inconvenience due to heavy rains.
