An unprecedented observation caught the attention of researchers during a scientific expedition conducted in the polar waters of Greenland.

An Arctic short-tail squid, of the species Rossia moelleri, was recorded for the first time near its own eggs in the natural environment.

The encounter occurred in the North Atlantic, near the Northeast Greenland National Park, during a marine exploration mission.

The footage revealed rare details about the reproduction of a species that remains little documented by science.

The study with the results was published on July 8, 2026 in the scientific journal Polar Biology.

Unprecedented record reveals animal in extreme waters

The observed squid measured approximately 10 centimeters in length and had a partially translucent body.

Its iridescent coloration varied between shades of purple and orange, creating an unusual visual effect under the lighting of the underwater equipment.

The animal was found at about 50 meters depth, in a region where the water temperature was close to −1.6 °C.

The researchers identified three clusters of eggs positioned near the cephalopod.

The structures were round-shaped and resembled small grape clusters attached to the seabed.

The record showed, therefore, the squid and its eggs in one of the coldest and most extreme environments on the planet.

Remote vehicle allowed squid observation

The discovery occurred with the aid of a remotely operated underwater vehicle, known as ROV.

This equipment is controlled remotely and allows exploration of deep areas without the direct presence of divers.

The vehicle’s cameras recorded the animal’s behavior, the arrangement of the eggs, and the habitat conditions.

The image capture took place during an expedition of the scientific mission Polar BLAST.

The trip was conducted on a vessel of the Secret Atlas Micro Cruise Expedition.

The project also received support from the organization Yachts for Science, which provides private vessels for studies in isolated regions.

Discovery expands knowledge about the species

Science recognizes approximately 68 species of bobtail squid.
