Revolution in transport: hydrogen train breaks record with 50 hours of continuous travel, covering 2.800 km without refueling, and redefines the future of sustainable transport in the world!

An impressive milestone for the rail industry and sustainable transport has been achieved with Stadler's FLIRT H2, a hydrogen-powered train that has entered the Guinness World Records. The train traveled incredible 2.803 kilometers (1.741,7 miles) without the need for refueling or recharging, setting the record for the longest distance ever traveled by a hydrogen-powered passenger train.

This 50-hour journey highlights the advancement of hydrogen technology in transport, proving that long train journeys can be completed without polluting gas emissions.

How hydrogen-powered trains are transforming the future of transportation

The historic journey of the FLIRT H2 train began in March 20th, 2024, in the center of ENSCO tests, in Pueblo, Colorado, United States. For more than 46 hours without interruption, the train remained in motion, without refueling or reloading.

This record-breaking journey also paved the way for even more efficient long-distance rail travel. The success of the FLIRT H2 train proves that hydrogen fuel cell technology can provide the energy needed for long journeys without emitting greenhouse gases.

For Stadler, this is an extraordinary achievement, but the impact goes far beyond the company. It is a milestone for the entire rail industry, demonstrating that hydrogen is a viable alternative to diesel or electric trains. This achievement lays a solid foundation for hydrogen to become an essential solution for zero-emission public transport.

FLIRT H2 Technology: A transportation model that operates without relying on fossil fuels

The FLIRT H2, presented to the public at InnoTrans 2022 exhibition in Berlin, is a modern evolution of the well-known FLIRT passenger train design. The novelty is the addition of a hydrogen fuel cell system and storage, allowing the train to operate without relying on fossil fuels.

After tests carried out in Switzerland and the United States, the FLIRT H2 demonstrated exceptional efficiency, culminating in the record attempt. In addition, the train is designed to operate in both hydrogen and battery-electric mode, switching between energy sources as needed, which optimizes consumption during the journey.

This flexibility reduces dependence on external power sources, making the FLIRT H2 a robust and adaptable solution for different rail systems. Its ability to travel long distances with high performance and without polluting the environment makes it a model for the future of sustainable transport.
