Revolut Announces $13 Billion Plan to Surpass Nubank and Become the World’s Largest Digital Bank. Understand the Strategy and Impacts.

The race for supremacy in the digital banking sector has just taken a historic new chapter. Revolut, a British fintech operating in over 30 countries, announced it will invest $13 billion in the coming years in an ambitious global expansion plan. The goal is clear: surpass Nubank and claim the title of the world’s largest digital bank.

According to information released by Reuters and Financial Times on 09/23/2025, the funds will be allocated across different areas of focus. In the United Kingdom, the company’s home market, $4 billion in investments are planned to enhance services, strengthen the technological infrastructure, and expand credit and investment product offerings. The remainder will be directed towards launching operations in new geographies and strengthening the company’s global infrastructure.

Nubank vs. Revolut: The Two Giants of the Sector

To understand the scale of the competition, just compare the numbers. Nubank ended 2024 with over 100 million customers in Brazil and Latin America, making it one of the largest digital banks in the world by number of users.

On the other hand, Revolut, while still trailing in this metric, stands out for the diversification of its services — including cryptocurrencies, international stock trading, multi-currency travel cards, and digital insurance.

This positioning difference explains the new strategy of the British fintech: to achieve global scale not just by the number of customers, but by the volume of assets under management and the profitability of the products offered.

The Plan to Dominate the Global Market

According to executives interviewed by Financial Times, Revolut’s $13 billion plan will be directed towards three main pillars:

  • Territorial Expansion – Entry into strategic markets such as the United States, Latin America (including Brazil), and countries in the Middle East and Asia.
  • Technology and Security – Heavy investments in artificial intelligence, blockchain infrastructure for payments, and fraud protection systems.
  • Portfolio Expansion – The fintech aims to go beyond cards and digital accounts, offering comprehensive solutions in credit, investments, insurance, and currency exchange.

One of the company’s declared goals is to become the global “financial superapp”, bringing together all the services that customers currently need to seek from different institutions within the same ecosystem.

The Impact in Brazil

Brazil, Nubank’s largest market, is also on Revolut’s radar. Market analysts suggest that the British fintech is likely to accelerate its entry into the country in the coming years, taking advantage of the favorable regulatory environment for digital institutions and the growing interest of the population in alternatives to the traditional banking system.

If the plan materializes, Brazilian consumers may witness a true battle of titans, with two of the largest fintechs in the world competing for space in the same territory. This should generate positive effects, such as increased innovation, reduced fees, and greater access to digital credit.

The Scale of the Investment

The announced $13 billion by Revolut is equivalent to over R$ 70 billion. For comparison, this amount exceeds the annual GDP of countries like Guinea-Bissau and also surpasses the budgets of several Brazilian ministries.

This sum reflects not only the fintech’s firepower but also the confidence of international investors in its ability to challenge established players like Nubank, Chime (USA), and N26 (Germany).

What Experts Are Saying

Fintech experts believe the sector is entering a new phase. While initially the competition focused on the number of customers and appeal to the unbanked, the current struggle is for profitability, product diversification, and global presence.

According to analysts cited by Reuters, Revolut’s bet is bold but could change the balance of power.

“If the company can transform its customer base into a global community offering multiple financial services, it has a real chance of surpassing Nubank in market value and international presence by the end of the decade,” assesses an economist consulted by the agency.

Nubank Under Pressure?

Despite Revolut’s offensive, Nubank remains strong. The company maintains high customer retention rates in Brazil, continues to expand its operations in Mexico and Colombia, and has been broadening its lines of credit and investment.

However, the challenge has been set. For the first time, a competitor with billion-dollar resources and a presence on multiple continents has openly declared its intention to become the largest digital bank on the planet, a title that many already attribute to Nubank.

The Billion-Dollar Race of Digital Banks

Revolut’s announcement makes it clear that the next decade will be marked by a billion-dollar race among digital banks. With increasingly digital consumers who are less dependent on physical branches, the competition will center on the ability to offer technology, security, accessible credit, and constant innovation.

For customers, the good news is that this competition promises to accelerate the transformation of the financial sector, making services cheaper, faster, and more global.

With the presentation of its $13 billion plan, Revolut no longer hides its ambitions. The target is clear: surpass Nubank and claim the title of the largest digital bank in the world. It remains to be seen whether, in this battle of giants, Brazil will merely be a battleground or also one of the big winners with the arrival of more competition and innovation.
