Russia and North Korea inaugurated the first dedicated road bridge between the two countries on September 7, 2026, creating a new land connection over the Tumen River in one of the smallest and most strategic border segments in Asia. Spanning approximately 1 kilometer, with two traffic lanes and integration into a nearly 5-kilometer border complex, the structure links the Russian region of Khasan to the North Korean territory of Rason and enables trucks to cross directly without relying on the old railway connection.
The ceremony took place simultaneously on both sides of the border and included a video conference with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song. The opening comes just over two years after Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty in Pyongyang that includes commitments for military assistance and expanded economic cooperation.
Thus, the new corridor emerges not only as a transportation project but also as a physical manifestation of the accelerated rapprochement between Moscow and Pyongyang.

First Road Bridge Creates Connection That Did Not Exist Between the Two Countries
Russia and North Korea share a land border of only about 17 kilometers, small compared to the over 1,400 kilometers of North Korea’s border with China. Still, until September 2026, the two countries lacked a conventional road bridge for direct car and truck traffic.
The main physical connection was the so-called Friendship Bridge, inaugurated in 1959 and dedicated to rail transport. For decades, vehicles could cross it only under special conditions, using an adaptation with planks over the railway structure, according to Reuters.
The new bridge changes this dynamic. For the first time, there is a passage specifically built for regular road traffic, allowing for year-round cargo circulation and, in a second phase, passenger traffic.
This is a significant logistical difference for two countries that are rapidly increasing their economic, military, and tourist cooperation.
Bridge is About 1 Kilometer Long with Two Lanes Over the Tumen River
The main structure is approximately 1 kilometer long and 7 meters wide, adequate to accommodate two traffic lanes.
Considering accesses, customs facilities, and other structures, the entire new border corridor approaches 5 kilometers in length.
The bridge spans the Tumen River, known as Tumannaya in Russian, near the coast of the Sea of Japan.
On the Russian side, the bridge connects to the Khasan area in Primorsky Krai. On the North Korean side, it reaches the Rason area, an important special economic zone in the country.
This location allows for the creation of a direct route between the far eastern region of Russia and the northeast of North Korea.
Construction Consumed Over 5,000 Tons of Metal Structures
Project figures indicate that, although the bridge is relatively short compared to major international crossings, the project required extensive engineering operations.
According to Russia’s Ministry of Transport, over 5,000 tons of metal structures and more than 9,000 cubic meters of concrete were used.
More than 70 workers and over 30 heavy machines were directly involved in the construction.
The execution also required synchronization between Russian and North Korean teams, as each side progressed from its own bank until the segments were connected over the river.
The physical joining of the structures occurred on April 21, 2026, months before the official opening.
The Construction Took 495 Days from Start to Opening
The construction officially began on April 30, 2025, at a ceremony that also featured Mikhail Mishustin and Pak Thae Song via videoconference.
Exactly 495 days later, on September 7, 2026, the bridge was inaugurated.
The project was formally agreed upon in 2024, during Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang and his meeting with Kim Jong Un.
At that time, both governments were advocating for a new road link as a way to eliminate a historic bottleneck in bilateral transport.
The old railway bridge simply did not provide enough capacity for the volumes and types of traffic that Moscow and Pyongyang intended to develop.
New Border Post Will Have Ten Lanes and Initial Capacity for 300 Vehicles Per Day
The bridge is just one part of the new infrastructure. On the Russian side, the Khasan Road Border Checkpoint has been established, marking the first permanent automotive crossing between Russia and North Korea.
The complex was designed with 10 lanes: four for cargo trucks, two for passenger cars, two for buses, and two for oversized vehicles.
When fully operational, the structure will have an initial capacity to process around 300 vehicles per day, with future potential to reach up to 800.
The projected capacity for people is approximately 2,325 travelers per day, according to figures released by the Russian Ministry of Transport at the inauguration.
This creates a much larger infrastructure than what was previously available for road movement.
Trucks Began Crossing Immediately After the Ceremony
The inauguration was not merely symbolic. Following the official speeches, columns of vehicles from both countries crossed the bridge, with trucks decorated with national flags marking the start of operations.
The Russian government announced that freight traffic would begin immediately, while full operations for passenger vehicles are expected to be introduced later, anticipated to be operational by the end of 2026.
The expansion is significant because a road route offers flexibility that a railway cannot replicate.
Trucks can leave directly from logistics centers, cross the border, and continue on the road network without the need to transfer cargo between different rail cars or systems.
For smaller volume products, urgent loads, and regional transport, this difference can reduce time and costs.
New Route Connects to the Russian Federal Network and Corridor to St. Petersburg
On the Russian side, the infrastructure was designed not to stop at the border.
The access road connects the new post to the federal highway system and the Ussuri Highway, integrating the passage into the network that reaches Vladivostok and other centers in the Russian Far East.
Mishustin stated that this connection facilitates access to the transport corridor that stretches between Vladivostok and St. Petersburg, crossing nearly all of Russia.
This means that North Korean goods entering Russian territory theoretically find a continuous land link to one of the largest road networks in the world.
In the opposite direction, Russian products can reach the North Korean border directly by truck.
This integration is precisely what Moscow presents as one of the main economic advantages of the new structure.
Bridge Complements Railway and Air Route Established Between Moscow and Pyongyang
The road corridor is part of a broader expansion of connections between the two countries.
The Friendship Railway Bridge has been operating over the Tumen since 1959. Additionally, in July 2025, Russia and North Korea inaugurated a regular direct air link between Moscow and Pyongyang.
Tourist trains between Vladivostok and Rason were also developed.
The Russian Ministry of Transport reported that passenger rail transport between the countries quadrupled in the first two months of 2026 compared to the same period the previous year.
The road bridge now adds a third relevant mode to this network.
Moscow’s strategy is to create parallel routes capable of transporting tourists, workers, goods, and equipment with less reliance on a single mode of transport.
Structure Named After Yakov Novichenko for Event Occurring in 1946
The new bridge has been given a name of significant symbolic value for the relationship between the two countries: Yakov Tikhonovich Novichenko.
Novichenko was a Soviet Army officer who, according to the historical narrative recognized by both Pyongyang and Moscow, protected Kim Il Sung, the founder of North Korea, during an assassination attempt in Pyongyang on March 1, 1946.
A grenade was thrown during a rally. Novichenko is said to have intercepted the device and shielded Kim Il Sung from the explosion, suffering severe injuries. He survived and later received North Korean honors.
The choice of the name also transforms the bridge into a political monument reflecting the historical relationship between the Soviet Union and North Korea.
During the inauguration, Novichenko’s family members participated in the ceremony.
Even the old ZAZ-968M car that belonged to the soldier, manufactured in 1980, led the column of vehicles on the Russian side during the first official crossing.
Bridge Emerges Two Years After Strategic Pact Signed by Putin and Kim Jong Un
The geopolitical dimension is inseparable from the project.
On June 19, 2024, Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un signed the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty during a visit by the Russian president to Pyongyang.
The document formally elevated the relationship between the two countries and includes a clause stipulating that one party must provide military assistance and other forms of support should the other come under armed attack.
The treaty also provides for cooperation in trade, investment, science, artificial intelligence, information technology, space, energy, agriculture, tourism, and development of border regions.
The construction of the bridge was agreed upon within this same context.
Thus, the infrastructure inaugurated in 2026 functions as one of the first major physical projects resulting from this new phase of partnership.
Ukraine War Accelerated the Approach Between Moscow and Pyongyang
Relations between Russia and North Korea have intensified particularly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
North Korea began supplying ammunition and military support to Russia, while Pyongyang also sent thousands of soldiers to Russian territory, including forces deployed in the Kursk region.
Russia, in turn, increased its economic and military support for the North Korean regime.
This cooperation has changed the nature of the bilateral relationship.
Whereas previously trade was limited and China concentrated virtually all of North Korea’s international economic involvement, Moscow has become significantly more strategically important.
Data cited by the Associated Press shows that about 98% of North Korea’s foreign trade in 2025 still occurred with China, indicating that Russia is far from replacing Beijing as the main trading partner.
However, the new bridge provides the infrastructure to gradually expand this participation.
One Kilometer of Bridge Changes a Border That Remained Almost Closed for Decades
Physically, the structure is only about 1 kilometer long. Geopolitically, its weight is much greater.
For 67 years, since the inauguration of the Friendship Bridge in 1959, the permanent overland link between Russia and North Korea has essentially relied on rail transport. There was no conventional roadway capable of accommodating trucks, cars, and buses on a daily basis.
Now there is.
The project required 495 days of construction, over 5,000 tons of metal structures, more than 9,000 m³ of concrete, and a new border post with ten lanes. The initial capacity will be 300 vehicles per day, with future expansion possible to 800.
Goods have already begun to cross the Tumen River, and passenger traffic is expected to further enhance this connection.
For Moscow, the bridge opens an additional route towards the Korean Peninsula and reinforces its strategy of integration with Asia. For Pyongyang, it creates a direct physical alternative to the enormous logistical dependence on the Chinese border.
And, above all, it transforms into concrete and steel a relationship that until a few years ago seemed primarily limited to diplomacy.
Russia and North Korea are now linked not only by treaties, trains, and flights. Since September 7, 2026, trucks can directly cross a bridge built to connect the two banks of the Tumen, visibly marking on the map a strategic partnership that Moscow and Pyongyang have been deepening rapidly.
