Shell and BYD Partnered to Launch the World’s Largest Electric Vehicle Charging Station. The Charging Station for Electric Vehicles Features 258 Charging Points.
Shell announced this Monday (18) that it has opened the world’s largest electric vehicle charging station. The project, in partnership with BYD, is located next to Shenzhen Airport in China, featuring 258 charging points, as well as solar panels with a capacity of generating 300 thousand kilowatt-hours per year.
Shell Operates About 800 Charging Stations Currently
According to data from Reuters, the electric vehicle charging station is operated as a joint venture between Shell and the Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD. Currently, Shell operates around 800 charging stations through joint ventures or wholly-owned subsidiaries across China.
It is important to note that Tesla also has one of the largest charging points in the world in China and California; however, these locations have spots for just over 100 cars, making Shell’s project the current leader.

Shell has been heavily investing in the electric vehicle market, like other oil companies. By last year, the network had 8,000 charging points, including options in Brazil. A project announced by the company in 2022 anticipated 35 charging stations spread throughout the country by March of this year.
The company also announced with ABB E-mobility a plan a few months ago to launch the first national network of Terra 360 chargers, the fastest electric vehicle charger in the world, in Germany.
Shell and BYD Are Committed to the Electric Vehicle Market
With this charging station for electric vehicles, Shell demonstrates a comprehensive commitment to innovation. However, the company is not limited to electric vehicle (EV) technology. It is also directing its efforts towards artificial intelligence (AI) as part of a strategy to enhance efficiency and production in its main business sector: offshore oil exploration.
Earlier this year, Shell announced a partnership with SparkCognition, a company specialized in big data analysis. This partnership focuses on applying advanced technology to process and analyze substantial volumes of seismic data to identify new oil reservoirs.
BYD and Shell Also Partnered to Serve 100,000 Electric Vehicle Customers
In April of this year, BYD and Shell announced they would provide at least 100,000 European customers with an exclusive Shell Recharge network, offering discounted charging at Shell’s fast and ultra-fast charging locations. The network will grant BYD customers access to more than 300,000 charging stations throughout Europe through Shell’s growing network of charging points located on streets, mobility hubs, Shell stations, and one of the largest roaming networks in Europe.
Commercial customers purchasing electric vehicles from BYD to electrify their fleets can also gain access through the Shell Card.
Shell Fleet Solutions offers business customers a wide range of products and services to manage their fleets efficiently and sustainably, including the hybrid card, a unique payment solution that covers billing for traditional fuels, electric fuels, and low-carbon alternative fuels.
According to the General Director of BYD Europe and International Cooperation Division, Michael Shu, the company is excited about the partnership with Shell to provide BYD customers exclusive access to top public tariff solutions. With the agreement, BYD customers will have access to the largest charging station network in Europe.
