Structures of 108m Will Be Installed at the 880 MW Offshore Wind Farm Next Year.
Siemens Gamesa is producing the largest wind turbine blades ever manufactured at the factory in Hull for the 880 MW Moray West offshore wind farm off the northeast coast of Scotland. A total of 180 blades will be manufactured in Hull for the 60 turbines in the project, following the completion of a major factory expansion that allows the facility to produce larger blades, such as the new 108-meter-long blades. The developer of Moray West, Ocean Winds, has made financing commitments with Siemens Gamesa to ensure that the expanded facility in Hull is ready to produce the new blades to meet the project’s demanding schedule. The blades will be the most used in an offshore wind farm in the UK, said wind turbine.
The Ocean Winds team and Gareth Davies MP, UK Treasury Secretary, were present to see the first blades come off the production line. Construction of Moray West is already underway. The turbines will begin to be installed in 2024, with the wind farm expected to be completed in 2025. Recently, Siemens Energy and Smulders Projects UK successfully loaded the last of the offshore transformer modules for the project, which will collect energy from the 60 wind turbines at Moray West. Clark MacFarlane, Managing Director of Siemens Gamesa in the UK, said: ‘This is another significant milestone not just for the team in Hull, the Moray West Project, but also for the UK’s renewable energy industry as a whole. ‘The growth of offshore wind turbine technology is only possible because of our people and their amazing efforts to continue providing solutions for our current and future energy needs.’
