Israeli Company Developed New Renewable Energy Technology for Solar Energy Storage Systems. The Technology Can Be Cheaper and More Efficient than Common Batteries
Without a doubt, the intermittency of solar energy is one of the main disadvantages of this renewable energy source and one of the factors that prevent greater expansion of photovoltaic projects worldwide. The battery storage system options currently available on the market still have a significantly shorter lifespan than solar panels, and their acquisition cost remains high. A project created by an Israeli company may resolve this impasse.

Renewable Energy Storage System That Mixes Air with Water
The innovative storage system created by the Israeli company based in Tel Aviv has been named Air Battery. The renewable energy project utilizes a system in which the excess electricity produced during the day powers a mechanism that mixes water with air, which is stored in an underground steel tank lined with a special polymer.
Thus, during the night, this air is released and moves wind turbines connected to generators that produce electricity again. The next day, the process starts anew.

Itaipu receives proposals in the renewable energy tender and reinforces the role of public universities in the energy transition with projects that can reduce costs, increase academic investments, and accelerate sustainable innovation in the country.
The system could become a better option for the storage system segment than batteries, as it presents an 80% efficiency in solar energy storage, very close to that of batteries, in addition to not wearing out over time or polluting the environment when it reaches the end of its lifecycle, unlike the toxic materials used in batteries.
Price of the New Renewable Energy Technology Is More Affordable than Batteries
Currently, the project’s price is similar to that of a common battery, averaging $250 per kilowatt-hour. However, the company claims that the new renewable energy technology could drop to under $200 by next year.
The new technology could be particularly useful for large solar energy systems in industries or companies, which could expand their savings with the storage system.
MIT Researchers Create New Battery for Solar Energy Storage Systems
MIT researchers have developed a new battery prototype that promises to innovate the storage system segment for renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind.
The new battery uses a semi-solid flow cell, which has a mixture containing dispersed particles of manganese dioxide and a conductive additive known as carbon black.
To demonstrate that zinc-manganese batteries provide greater savings, the scientists made comparisons with other cells that use hydrogen over durations of 8, 24, and 72 hours. In intervals longer than 24 hours, the researchers’ battery surpassed the energy retention capacity of common vanadium and lithium-ion redox flow cells.
