In São João do Piauí (PI), a solar power plant built on an area of 480 hectares has the capacity to supply power to more than 200,000 homes. In addition to generating electricity, it also brings jobs, income, and hope to the residents

The municipality of São João do Piauí has the largest solar power plant in the state, with the capacity to provide enough electricity to supply over 200,000 residences. The solar power park was built on an area of 480 hectares and features 660,000 solar panels that generate electricity and comprise 22,000 collection tables.

High Voltage Specialist Speaks on Solar Power Plant in Piauí

According to Oséias Oliveira, a high voltage specialist, the location of the municipality was very influential, as experts believed it couldn’t be an extremely hot place but also one that didn’t have constant rainfall.

Thus, when they pointed out that São João do Piauí would be the site for the construction of the solar power plant, they studied the consistency of the clouds and, of course, the sun, where it was determined that the municipality is very suitable. According to the specialist, the plant that provides electricity to 200,000 residences has sensors that track the angle of the sun, known as Trackers.

The trackers follow and send signals for the collection tables to move to receive the best possible solar incidence. When the sun sets, the Trackers turn the tables upward as a form of protection, as in the case of strong winds, the wind will pass over or under the solar panels, not damaging the equipment.

Investments in Solar Energy in Piauí Bring Hope to the Municipality

The solar power park in Piauí belongs to a Spanish group; however, 80% of its employees are residents of the state. The plant, besides generating electricity, creates jobs and hope for those living in the region, like Lemoel Rodrigues, a Safety Technician.

Lemoel has been working in the area for a month and states that it has been very rewarding, as he completed his course in 2020 and has already had the chance to put his knowledge into practice thanks to investments in the solar power park in São João do Piauí. According to Edson Batista, a school director, the arrival of companies in the municipality has led his unit to seek to keep up with the advancement.

Edson states that when a new company arrives, it automatically looks for new courses to prepare the population and generate labor for that sector. Men and women prepared for an increasingly demanding job market prevent young people from having to leave their cities in search of opportunities.

Piauí Achieves Leadership in the Solar Energy Sector

In May, the state achieved leadership in Brazil for the capacity to produce electricity from solar energy. According to Aneel, the power of solar power plants installed in Piauí exceeded 1 GWh.

When combined with wind energy, the two sources were able to generate 91% of the state’s power that month, demonstrating that Piauí was a major generator of renewable energy. According to data from Aneel, the state’s energy matrix in May was 3.71 GW.
