Mexico Has Started Building Its Own Cheap Electric Vehicles Ready to Compete with Chinese Models

Mexico has taken a decisive step towards independence in the production of cheap electric vehicles by developing its own prototype, promising to challenge the hegemony of China and India in this market.

The newly sworn-in president of the country, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced that Mexican automakers are working on affordable models, aiming to build a domestic supply chain that reduces dependence on Asian imports.

With Tesla postponing its plans to build a factory in Mexico until after the launch of a new electric model in the United States, scheduled for November, the country remains determined to manufacture EVs with internal resources.

Last Friday, Sheinbaum confirmed that several prototypes of small and affordable electric vehicles are already in a phase of development in Mexico.

The EV manufacturing project in Mexico aims to strengthen the local automotive industry, with the goal of producing as much as possible within the country. “We will generate supply chains to ensure that everything in the electric car is manufactured in the country and import as little as possible,” Sheinbaum explained.

This strategy aligns with the desire to reduce dependence on imports from Asia and ensure a stable and sustainable supply chain.

In her inaugural speech on October 1st, the president revealed that Mexico is working on developing its own electric vehicle, the “Olinia,” which has become one of her government’s priorities.

This affordable car will not only promote the adoption of electric vehicles in the country but also help make transportation safer, especially in regions with high accident rates.

Challenges and Opportunities in EV Production

According to Sheinbaum, the small electric vehicle will be entirely designed by young Mexican talents, demonstrating the government’s commitment to promoting local innovation.

Although the president did not specify which companies will be responsible for producing the new models, the expectation is that Mexican automakers will collaborate with researchers in the country to develop a diverse range of electric vehicles.

Mexico already has a solid foundation in the production of electric motors, providing a significant advantage in this new project.

Companies in Mexico have been manufacturing electric motors for a long time,” Sheinbaum recalled, adding that the integration between these companies and the scientific community will be essential for the initiative’s success.

The creation of electric vehicles in the country is part of a broader strategy to promote the development of high-tech projects, such as semiconductor production, crucial for ensuring a secure and efficient supply chain.

Lithium: The White Gold of Electric Mobility

Another pillar of the Mexican strategy is the prioritization of lithium, a key element for the production of electric vehicle batteries.

Mexico has significant lithium reserves, and according to Sheinbaum, the government is developing new technologies to extract this resource more cheaply and efficiently.

The idea is to ensure that lithium is primarily used in the domestic market, helping to boost the production of electric vehicles in the country and making Mexico an important player in the global supply chain for this strategic resource.
