Discover How Schneider Electric Is Redefining the Future of the Industry with Sustainable Advances in Mining

In 2024, Schneider Electric established itself as an unbeatable leader by achieving zero carbon emissions at its Blumenau unit through electrification and renewable platforms. With a keen eye on the convergence of the electrical and digital realms, the company heavily invested in automation and energy transition, placing Brazil on the map of green industrial operations. The company does not settle for small changes but seeks to completely revolutionize the market with its disruptive innovations. The carbon neutrality project marks a new horizon for corporate sustainability and reaffirms Schneider Electric’s commitment to innovative environmental practices.

Mining emerges as one of the most benefited sectors from these transformations. The company sees unlimited opportunities in the extractive industry, promoting responsible mineral exploration and efficient resource use. Schneider Electric demonstrates that, with technology, it is possible to optimize operations and reduce environmental impacts. According to the report released in October 2023, mining is experiencing significant growth, driven by smart solutions that lower costs and enhance productivity in the sector.

The Ongoing Mining Revolution with Technological Advancements

The evolution of electrification since January 2023 has paved the way for Schneider Electric to achieve its goals by December 2024. By intelligently utilizing clean energies, such as solar and wind, the company has made impactful changes in mining, offering a more sustainable and technologically advanced future perspective.

The role of digitalization cannot be underestimated, as it has become the central pillar for the development of sustainable projects. The integration of smart systems with mining operations provides unprecedented efficiency, driving not only production but also promoting a more responsible and conscious future. Using technology to ensure environmental viability is an obligation that the company takes seriously.

Based on statements from Schneider Electric’s CEO in July 2023, the company projects a continuous expansion of its green initiatives in the mining sector for the coming years. The goal is ambitious: to become a global benchmark in sustainable mining solutions.

It is evident that Schneider Electric’s approach transcends mere environmental adjustments; it acts as a catalyst for a new era in mining, focusing on the conscious and innovative use of resources. The information presented is based on statements from CEO Magazine and Mining Weekly.

Zero CO2 Achievement by Schneider Electric

Schneider Electric, renowned for its global leadership in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, recently achieved the ‘Zero CO2’ certification for its factory located in Blumenau (SC). Since 2021, the entirety of the electricity consumed at the facility has been sourced from 100% renewable sources. In November of this year, the factory completed its transition to fully electrified processes, including furnaces, compressors, and other industrial equipment, completely eliminating the use of fossil fuels. This remarkable success results from recent investments in modern technologies.

Energy Efficiency and Innovation at Schneider Electric

Furthermore, the factory, with 50 years of operation, has managed to reduce its energy consumption by 20%, thanks to a strong focus on energy efficiency. This space is recognized by Schneider Electric as a smart factory, due to its high level of digitalization and advanced sustainability practices. Focusing on innovation and quality, the company has become a reference in the industrial sector, producing a variety of low and medium voltage electrical distribution equipment. These products are customized, digital, and eco-efficient, serving both the Brazilian market and Latin America and other global destinations.

Engineering and Sustainability Center

The Unit also houses an engineering center and integration of modular substations, focusing on the South American market. Roberto Rossi, president of Schneider Electric in Brazil, states that the goal was to achieve this sustainability milestone by 2029, but it was accomplished ahead of schedule. ‘The progress we’ve made demonstrates our persistent commitment to technological advancements and sustainable developments’, Rossi declared. The factory in Blumenau is equipped with digital and sustainability technologies, integrated through Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure® platform, facilitating the collection and analysis of essential data.

Advances in Electrification and Internal Movement

The electrification of the plant has proven to be comprehensive: internal movement vehicles are operated without fossil fuels, and several charging stations for electric vehicles have been added, benefiting operations and visitors. To ensure even greater energy efficiency, the factory utilizes Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure Asset Advisor platform to monitor the performance and reliability of electrical substations. This system is integrated with the Power Monitoring Expert software, which manages water and energy consumption in detail, providing optimized control and insights for continuous sustainability.

Convergence of the Electrical and Digital

‘The planning for electrified processes, combining new asset investments, upgrades of existing assets, and digital solutions, has generated significant increases in productivity and energy efficiency’, explains Rossi. ‘We call this movement Electricity 4.0′, which symbolizes the convergence of electrical and digital on a large scale, providing greater efficiency and decarbonization for smarter and greener energy, and thus, more sustainable’, he concludes. With around 2,200 employees, Schneider Electric in Brazil has three factories, one administrative office, two distribution centers, and operates over 10,000 sales points, solidifying its innovative and sustainable presence in the country for nearly 77 years.
