Renault Group, Nissan Motor and Mitsubishi Motors form the world's largest automotive alliance through the automotive industry's oldest and most productive cross-cultural partnership

The world's biggest car alliance, made up of Renault Group, Nissan and Mitsubishi, is ready to shed a role overseeing ties with Daimler in favor of individual relations with the German group, three sources told Reuters, as it tries to better manage a partnership that did not meet initial hopes.

The move comes as alliance-level executive Jacques Verdonck, responsible for cooperation with Daimler, retires at the end of the month, sources familiar with the matter say.

The French multinational Renault will have its head of partnerships, Sandra Gomez, while Nissan will do the same with Catherine Perez.

Mitsubishi will also have a person in charge of partnerships, the sources said, adding that the bilateral approach was in line with the alliance's new "leader-follower" strategy. This involves building on each automaker's strengths in certain areas.

The brand plan tries to change its image and finally the era of Brazilian Carlos Ghosn in the alliance. The architect of the Franco-Japanese partnership, which also extended the collaboration to Daimler, was arrested on charges of financial misconduct in Japan in late 2018 before fleeing to Lebanon in 2019. He denies any wrongdoing.

Ghosn's arrest and escape strained relations between the different manufacturers and between Nissan and Renault, which are now working to get back on track with cost-saving joint production projects, among other steps.

Collaborations on Renault's Twingo compact car and Daimler's Smart model are about to end, and some industrial cooperation targets have been downgraded over the years.

But Daimler still has a factory in Mexico with Nissan, and has been exploring the possibility of jointly developing at least one large van model with Renault.

Electric vehicles could yield other opportunities for the world's largest automotive alliance, formed by the Renault Group, Nissan and Mitsubishi

An industry shift to electric vehicles could yield further opportunities, one of the sources said.

"The collaboration with Daimler is currently made up of Renault-Daimler projects, those from Nissan-Daimler and some in between," said another of the sources, with another saying the changes reflected a more pragmatic approach.

Renault Group, Nissan Motor and Mitsubishi Motors form the world's largest automotive alliance through the automotive industry's oldest and most productive cross-cultural partnership. The cumulative sales of the three partner companies exceeded 10,6 million vehicles in nearly 200 countries in 2017.

Partner companies are based on collaboration and optimization of their synergies to take their competitiveness to a maximum level, in addition to signing strategic collaboration agreements with other automakers. Aliança is a leader in the production of vehicles zero emission and develops innovative technologies for autonomous, connected and accessible vehicles, with a focus on the mobility of the future.
