Chinese Version of the SUV Features Design Inspired by Electric Vehicles, High-Tech Interior with Larger Screens and More Powerful Engines, Keeping Initial Price Below R$ 100 Thousand in Direct Conversion.
The Toyota Corolla Cross sold in China is known as Frontlander and has undergone a mid-life update that changed its front, cabin, and features.
The SUV received a “closed” grille inspired by electric vehicles, a new arrangement for the lights, and a redesigned interior featuring a 12.9” central screen and a fully digital instrument panel.
There, it starts at 132,800 yuan (around R$ 98 thousand in direct conversion) and offers two 2.0 engine options, including a more powerful hybrid system than the Brazilian 1.8 flex.

While much of the industry rushes to automate production, Rolls-Royce takes over 600 hours to hand-build each car in Goodwood and still accepts orders so complex that they can take up to four years to be completed.

Smaller than the Model Y, lighter, with a single motor and designed to cost less than the current Model 3, Tesla’s new compact electric SUV is born in China and could seal the automaker’s return to the race for mass-market electric vehicles.

Kawasaki took the technology from its most brutal racing bikes, squeezed it into a 400cc 4-cylinder engine that revs to 15,000 RPM, and created the ZX-4R, a machine that shouldn’t exist in this displacement but is making experienced riders rethink everything they thought they knew about mid-range motorcycles.

The culture of cars that jump on the asphalt was born in the garages of Mexicans in the 1940s, was treated as a crime in the United States for decades, and has now become an official postage stamp of the American Postal Service in a twist that no one expected.

Design with Electric Inspiration
The front abandons the large air intake and adopts a painted element that reduces the opening for cooling, a typical solution for EVs.
The full LED headlights may vary depending on the trim level, and the bumper features new frames and cutouts.
At the rear, the internal design of the lights has been revised, maintaining the known proportions of the project.
Redesigned Cabin and Larger Screens
Inside, the Frontlander adopts a lower and cleaner dashboard, horizontal air vents, and ambient lighting.
The highlight is the 12.9” multimedia screen, accompanied by an 8.8” digital instrument cluster.
The system runs on dedicated automotive hardware and includes voice commands, OTA updates, and support for CarPlay, Huawei HiCar 5.0, and ICCOA Carlink.
There is also wireless charging and comfort improvements, such as new seats.
For safety, the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 package becomes standard equipment in the announced versions.

Dimensions of the SUV
The Chinese model measures 4,490 mm in length, 1,825 mm in width, and 1,625 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,640 mm.
Compared to the national Corolla Cross, there is a gain of 30 mm in length, while the other dimensions remain equivalent.
In Brazil, the official technical specification reports 4,460 mm in length and the same wheelbase of 2,640 mm.
More Powerful Engines
The lineup includes two 2.0-liter options.
The gasoline version uses the four-cylinder Dynamic Force engine with 169 hp (171 PS) and CVT, always with front-wheel drive.
The hybrid version combines a 2.0 combustion engine with 156 hp with an electric motor of 111 hp and a lithium-ion battery.
Toyota reports a system power of 147 kW, which is about 200 hp, also with e-CVT and front-wheel drive.
In a direct comparison, the Chinese setup surpasses the Brazilian flex hybrid, which has 122 hp combined and a 1.8 engine.

Price and Positioning
GAC Toyota announced the starting price of 132,800 yuan for the updated lineup, with higher ranges varying by engine and equipment package.
In direct conversion, the entry price is below R$ 100 thousand, not considering taxes or local costs that apply in Brazil.
During promotional periods in the Chinese market, there are reports of temporary campaigns with even lower prices, a common practice in this segment.
Connectivity and Equipment
In addition to the larger screens and the new layout, the Frontlander offers convenience and connectivity features focused on the Chinese market.
Among them are integration with local app platforms and voice assistants, as well as remote system updates.
Depending on the version, there are differentiations such as high-power induction charging and comfort items typical of the Asian market.
Toyota’s Global Strategy
The strategy of having “twins” for China is common among automakers.
In Toyota’s case, the Frontlander is the counterpart manufactured by GAC Toyota, while the “Chinese Corolla Cross” is produced by FAW Toyota.
Both share the TNGA-C architecture and undergo aligned mid-cycle updates.
Globally, the Corolla Cross has established itself as one of the best-selling models in the world.
In 2024, it totaled 859,000 units, ranking behind only the RAV4 and Model Y in that annual ranking.
And Brazil?
In the Brazilian market, the Corolla Cross has recently received content updates and continues with the known 1.8 hybrid and 2.0 flex mechanical base, including the 12.3” digital panel in selected versions.
The dimensions and usage proposition remain aligned with local preferences, focusing on comfort and efficiency.
Still, the visual and technological update of the Frontlander shows a possible path for future regional changes.
Given the Chinese package with electric-style front, restyled cabin, and more powerful hybrid system, the question remains: do you believe the national Corolla Cross should adopt this update — including the 2.0 hybrid setup — or does the model sold here already fully meet what Brazilian consumers are looking for?
