A Century-Old Locomotive Takes Visitors on an Immersive Journey Between Itu and Salto, Revealing Railway Curiosities, Theatrical Performances, and Milestones of Brazilian Republican History Amidst the Scenery of the Paulista Interior.

Historical Route of the Republic Train Unites Culture and Tourism

The Republic Train, an old composition known as the Republican Train, travels a distance of 7.6 kilometers between the cities of Itu and Salto in the interior of São Paulo, providing a unique cultural and historical immersion.

Operated by Serra Verde Express, the trip lasts about 45 minutes and offers passengers not only rural landscapes but also artistic interventions and content about the history of Brazilian railways and the Proclamation of the Republic.

The railroad used for the ride was originally inaugurated in 1873, one day before the Convention of Itu, an event that marked the founding of the Paulista Republican Party.

This political moment played a decisive role in building the movement that would lead to the Proclamation of the Republic on November 15, 1889.

With this backdrop, the journey takes on a symbolic character while providing entertainment and learning.

Onboard Experience and Wagon Categories

During the journey between Itu and Salto, specialized monitors present visitors with historical facts and curiosities about the national railway system.

Onboard, there are also theatrical performances with period characters that simulate scenes from the 1870s, providing an engaging atmosphere that refers to the republican era.

The composition of the Republic Train consists of four wagons, divided into three categories: Touristic, Boutique, and Panoramic.

Each offers a distinct type of service and comfort.

The Touristic Category, with two wagons — ‘Prudente de Morais’ and ‘Dona Olímpia’ — offers upholstered seats, large windows, and snacks with drinks included in the ticket.

The Boutique, represented by the ‘Anselmo Duarte’ wagon, has comfortable sofas, air conditioning, panoramic balcony, and unlimited drinks.

This category is also pet-friendly and has welcomed passengers accompanied by various pets.

The most economical option is the Panoramic Category, in the ‘Michel Temer’ wagon.

Completely open and equipped with bistro-style stools and tables, it was designed to accommodate cyclists and their bicycles.

Tickets for this category are sold exclusively by phone, WhatsApp, or at the stations with prior scheduling.

Tickets for the Republic Train can be purchased through the official website, in person at the Itu or Salto stations, or via WhatsApp.

Advance purchase, at least seven days ahead, is recommended, especially for those who wish to choose a specific wagon or travel on weekends when there are more excursions.

Single tickets start at R$ 45 in the Panoramic Category, R$ 105 in the Touristic Category, and R$ 135 in the Boutique Category.

Packages that include round trip, lunch, or guided tours in both cities are also available, with prices varying depending on the included services.

There are also discounts for residents of Itu and Salto (15%) and free entry for children up to five years old, with only the boarding fee of R$ 16 per leg to be paid.

A promotional code offers a 5% discount on the advance purchase of tickets and packages on the official website.

Republic Train: Combined Routes with Cultural Tours

Various package options enhance the experience with guided visits to historical and cultural sites.

In Itu, highlights include the Republican Museum — where the 1873 Convention was held —, the Church of Our Lady of Candelária, the Imperial House, and the São Luiz Factory.

In Salto, the Waterfall Complex, which includes the Ytu-Guaçu Waterfall, the suspended bridge, and the artificial island of the old Porto Goés power plant, provides contact with nature and urban memory.

Specialized guides contextualize the importance of the sites visited, enriching the tour with information about each space’s role in regional historical formation.

Museseums such as those in Salto, the Viewpoint of the Stretched Bridge, and Rocha Moutonnée Park complete the itinerary with geological and panoramic content.

Gastronomy at the Stations and Thematic Environment

The stations in Itu and Salto have their own restaurants, Stazione, serving typical Brazilian dishes in a themed environment next to the tracks.

In the lunch packages, visitors can choose from filet mignon parmigiana, chicken, barreado, or vegetarian spaghetti.

The stations also offer cultural spaces.

In Salto, for instance, there is a small cinema room showing excerpts from the award-winning film “The Promised One,” directed by Anselmo Duarte, who the Boutique category wagon is named after.

Republic Train: Seasonal Programming and Special Departures

In addition to regular trips on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the Republic Train hosts thematic events on specific dates.

The Hallowtrain, in October, features Halloween decor.

The Beer Train, mid-year, offers craft beer tastings with live music.

In December, the train receives Christmas decorations and performances.

For those departing from São Paulo or Jundiaí, there are complete packages with ground transportation to Itu, lunch, guided visits, and return train ride at the end of the day.

This option facilitates access to the ride, especially for those looking for a day experience without the need for overnight stay.

Educational Tourism and Valuing Historical Heritage

With a strong educational appeal, the Republic Train stands out as an example of how tourism can unite leisure and learning.

The short route is compensated by the richness of cultural activities and historical ambiance.

By traveling the same line that took Republicans to the Convention of Itu, visitors revive an essential chapter of Brazilian political history.

The presence of qualified guides and the integration between natural, memorial, and cultural attractions make the experience complete and accessible to different audience profiles, including families, students, and those interested in railway history.

This train ride between Itu and Salto is establishing itself as an enriching alternative for those seeking a weekend getaway with content and countryside charm.
