According to the concessionaire, the work involves tree trimming and vegetation removal to reduce the risk of falling trees on the road.

The Concessionaire Has Launched a Four-Day Stop-and-Go Operation on the Mountain
The scheme is your classic stop-and-go: one lane open, both directions alternating, with someone managing who passes and who waits.
It will last for four days, from September 8 to 11, 2026, divided into two blocks of two days each, with each block focused on one direction.
According to G1 Mato Grosso, the timetable was announced before it began, in an announcement about the partial closure of Serra de São Vicente published by the portal.
On September 8 and 9, the closure will affect the northbound direction, between km 343 and 352
On September 8 and 9, the restriction will be in the northbound direction, from km 343 to km 352 on BR-364, which is 9 kilometers.
Nine kilometers may seem short on a map. Yet in the mountains, with a heavy truck and a long ramp, it becomes a stretch that drivers navigate slowly, even without construction.
According to the concessionaire, the closure is not continuous: during the single-lane window, traffic continues to pass, albeit in alternating convoys.
The northbound lane leads to Cuiabá, thus impacting those traveling from Rondonópolis to the capital with a loaded trailer and a schedule to keep.

On September 10 and 11, the operation will switch sides and move to the variant of the mountain
On September 10 and 11, the operation will shift to the southbound direction, from km 0 to km 11 of the Serra de São Vicente variant.
This second block covers 11 kilometers, two more than the first, and the mileage starts again from zero because the variant has its own numbering system.
Thus, those descending to Rondonópolis during the last two days will face the same waiting scheme, but on the opposite side of the mountain.
The traffic alternates every 30 minutes, one direction at a time
The interval is 30 minutes for each direction. Therefore, those arriving just after the signal closes will have a half-hour wait ahead.
Half an hour stopped doesn’t always mean a full half hour. If the queue accumulates more vehicles than can fit in one window, part of the convoy will wait for the next cycle.
That’s when the bottleneck appears. The queue doesn’t move at the clock’s pace; it moves at the pace of the slowest vehicle that entered the stretch.
The road fully closes at 7:30 AM and reopens partially at 8:30 AM
Daily routines start early. At 7:30 AM, the section is completely closed to allow teams to set up the day’s signage.
While the signage is being installed, no one can pass through. An entire hour of road closure at the beginning of the morning disrupts any delivery schedule.
An hour later, at 8:30 AM, half of the road reopens, and a “Stop and Go” system is implemented, with both directions sharing the same lane.
Those leaving Rondonópolis early in the morning may arrive at the mountain pass just when the total closure starts, leaving them with no choice but to wait it out.

At 4:30 PM, the section closes again, with full reopening at 5:00 PM
In the late afternoon, the scene repeats. At 4:30 PM, there is another total closure, and full reopening only occurs at 5:00 PM.
There are two total closures each day, one at the start and another at the end of the team’s work period, each set at times that most people do not check.
After 5:00 PM, the road returns to normal, providing relief for those traveling at night but none for those who need to drive during the day.
There are 9.5 hours of traffic squeezed into a single lane each day
In total, the daily window of restricted operation is 9.5 hours, from the first closure to the complete reopening at the end of the afternoon.
Nine and a half hours exactly cover the core productive day, meaning the period that almost everyone chooses to travel.
When multiplied by four days, the impact accumulates. However, no numbers have been disclosed regarding the vehicles affected or estimated lost time per truck.
The stated reason is tree trimming and vegetation removal
The justification from Nova Rota do Oeste is preventive: trimming trees and removing vegetation to reduce the risk of tree falls onto the road.
This makes sense in a mountain area, where the slope tends to be close to the lane, and a falling tree has no place to land except on the road.
Additionally, the number of trees trimmed and the extent of removed vegetation have not been disclosed, so it’s possible to measure the inconvenience, but not the service.

Half of the lane in the mountains doesn’t mean half the speed; it leads to a traffic jam
On a dual lane road, a slow truck can be overtaken, and the queue dissolves by itself. On a single lane, it starts dictating the speed for everyone behind it.
Thus, half a lane in the mountains weighs more than half a lane on flat ground. The incline requires torque, and the queue demands everything else.
I can only imagine the driver who stopped for half an hour, climbed behind an entire convoy, and reached the summit with their delivery time already lost.
BR-364 is the state’s main highway, with the mountain range located in the middle
BR-364 handles the road traffic exiting Mato Grosso, and Serra de São Vicente is situated right in between Rondonópolis and Cuiabá.
It’s easy to see why any restrictions there become a state-wide issue, even when they last just four days and have a set end time.
Seen this way, it’s the kind of service that the vegetation demands be repeated, but nothing has been announced aside from these four dates.
The operation ends on September 11. Until then, anyone traveling up or down the mountain needs to add half an hour of wait time to each trip.
