Cambodian Leader Attributes U.S. President with Mediating the Resolution of the Conflict with Thailand That Averted Economic Collapse in the Country

Cambodia has confirmed it intends to nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, according to an official statement from Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol on Friday (1st). The decision comes after the direct involvement of the President of the United States in mediating a ceasefire with Thailand, ending the largest armed conflict on the border between the two countries in over a decade.

According to the Reuters agency, Trump’s diplomatic offensive included a decisive phone call last week, which unlocked negotiations held in Malaysia. The conflict resulted in at least 43 fatalities and more than 300,000 displaced. The truce proposal was accepted by the parties earlier this week.

Who Is Nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize?

The announcement of the nomination came from Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and chief trade negotiator of Cambodia, during an interview with reporters in Phnom Penh. When asked by text message about the confirmation of the nomination, he replied: “yes.” Chanthol thanked Trump for “bringing peace” and stated that he deserves international recognition for his efforts.

Besides Cambodia, Pakistan and Israel have also publicly expressed their intention to nominate the American leader for the Nobel. Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu claimed to have submitted a formal recommendation. In June, the Pakistani government cited Trump’s role in de-escalating tensions with India.

What Was Trump’s Role in the Ceasefire Between Thailand and Cambodia?

The conflict, which lasted five days, involved long-standing territorial disputes and military tensions localized at the border of the two countries. It was Trump’s direct intervention — with a phone call to both governments — that, according to Cambodian authorities, allowed for the advancement of a ceasefire negotiated in Kuala Lumpur.

The White House spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, confirmed the President’s involvement and posted on X: “Give Him the Nobel Peace Prize!”. The message resonated globally and fueled the campaign for international recognition.

Besides Mediation, What Other Factors Influenced the Decision?

Sun Chanthol also mentioned the reduction of tariffs on Cambodian products exported to the U.S., as a second reason for the nomination. Washington had announced plans to impose tariffs of 49% on clothing and footwear, but backed down to 19% after negotiations.

According to Chanthol, this change averted the collapse of a vital sector for the Cambodian economy, preserving jobs and export revenues. “We recognize your great efforts for peace and the economy,” stated the Deputy Prime Minister.

What Does the Nobel Prize Committee Say?

The decision regarding the Nobel Peace Prize rests with the Norwegian Committee, responsible for assessing hundreds of nominations received each year. Any serving political leader can be nominated by governments, parliamentarians, former laureates, and organizations with consultative status.

The formal nomination for the 2025 Nobel will only be evaluated in the first quarter of next year, and the names of the nominees remain confidential for 50 years. However, it is common for leaders to publicly disclose their intentions for political or diplomatic reasons.

Has Trump Been Nominated Before?

Yes. During his first term, Trump was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain. The nominations, however, did not result in an award.

The new nomination from Cambodia reignites the debate regarding the U.S.’s role in international conflicts and the political and symbolic criteria of the Nobel Peace Prize, which is often criticized for its subjectivity and geopolitical context.
