Vale Halts Mining Operations In MG After Suspension Of Permit Due To Overflow; City Hall Demands Urgent Environmental Measures.

Vale has halted mining operations at the Fábrica and Viga units in MG after the suspension of the permit mandated by the City Hall of Congonhas.

The decision was communicated to the market on Monday night (01/26/2026) and comes after an overflow reported in a pit on Sunday, which affected nearby areas and caused environmental impacts in the central region of the state.

The suspension was imposed when the municipal government required urgent control and monitoring measures where the occurrences were registered, as a response to successive events in less than 24 hours and due to the need for investigation and damage mitigation.

Permit Suspension Leads To Immediate Halt Of Mining In MG

The permit suspension was formalized through an official document from the City Hall of Congonhas, which determined the interruption of mining activities at the Fábrica and Viga units.

Furthermore, the municipality required emergency control, monitoring, and environmental mitigation actions, increasing oversight over mining in the MG region.

In a statement, Vale stated that it will fully cooperate with the competent authorities and provide all necessary clarifications.

The company also stressed that its dams in the area maintain “unchanged stability and safety conditions,” with continuous monitoring.

Overflow In Pit And Environmental Impacts Increase Scrutiny

The incident that prompted the permit suspension occurred in the early hours of Sunday, when there was an overflow in a pit at the Fábrica mine.

Hours later, another event was registered at the Viga mine, also in Congonhas. In one instance, water with sediment advanced through waterways and reached the Maranhão River, according to information from the Municipal Civil Defense.

The day before, the MG government reported that environmental damage was identified due to sediment loading and sedimentation of Maranhão River tributaries.

Vale declared that there was no loading of mining tailings, but only water with sediment (soil).

Production Affected And Financial Market Assessment

The two units with suspended operations have a combined production of about 8 million tons per year, equivalent to 2.4% of Vale’s average iron ore guidance for 2026.

Analysts from Santander assessed the permit suspension as negative in the short term, although the company has maintained its production projections.

On the other hand, RBC analysts highlighted that the causes of the overflow remain under investigation and that the duration of the license suspension, as well as the associated costs, are still unclear.

They also warned that potential impacts on the Maranhão River could intensify regulatory scrutiny over mining in MG.

City Hall Imposes Conditions For Resuming Activities

The City Hall of Congonhas stated that the permit suspension also prevents administrative activities, such as the issuance of invoices.

According to the municipal secretary of Environment and Climate Change, João Luís Lobo, the resumption of operations will depend on meeting a series of environmental compensation measures.

“The conditions we have set for the return of activities are several environmental compensation measures. All damages must be thoroughly investigated,” said the secretary.

He added that the municipality requires guarantees that new overflows will not occur, as well as preliminary reports on the stability and safety of affected areas.

ANM Monitors Occurrences And Investigates Responsibilities

The National Mining Agency (ANM) reported that there was no rupture or collapse of dams in the occurrences recorded at the Fábrica and Viga mines.

According to the agency, the events are related to operational infrastructures, such as drainage structures, without the characterization of structural failure in dams.

“Both situations are being monitored by technical teams from the Agency, with verification of the operating conditions of the involved structures and the measures adopted by the entrepreneur,” stated the ANM.

The agency added that the investigation of responsibilities is part of the regulatory process, with penalties applied if irregularities are found.

Continuous Monitoring And Next Steps

As the process advances, Vale reiterated that it maintains uninterrupted monitoring of the structures under its responsibility in MG.

The continuation of the permit suspension will depend on the results of the investigations, the assessment of the impacts of the overflow, and compliance with the environmental requirements imposed by the municipality and regulatory agencies.

Thus, the episode reinforces the debate on mining, licensing, and operational safety in MG, placing Vale under heightened scrutiny from authorities, the market, and local communities.
