Contested by ten bidders in five lots, the new energy transmission lines will add up to 2,150 megavolt-amperes in transformation capacity and will be ready between 42 and 60 months, in a bid where the highest discount offered reached 54.83% and the lowest was 37.89%

There is a dispute that decides how much Brazilians pay on their electricity bills, and it happens away from the spotlight. In 2026, the result was a cut by half. According to CNN Brazil, in a report from March 27, 2026, the energy transmission auction secured five lots with investments of approximately 3.3 billion reais and an average discount of 50.69%. The winners agreed to receive half of the expected ceiling.

And this money turns into physical infrastructure spread across the country. According to CNN Brazil, the projects total 798 kilometers of transmission lines and 2,150 megavolt-amperes in transformation capacity, distributed across 11 states. It’s a new transmission line cutting through almost a third of the federation units.

Where the energy transmission lines will pass

The map of this auction covers practically all regions. According to CNN Brazil, the lots are distributed across Bahia, Ceará, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, Sergipe, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo. North, Northeast, Southeast, South, and Midwest are all included in the same round.

And the construction of these transmission lines is not quick. According to CNN Brazil, the completion deadlines range from 42 to 60 months, generating more than 8,498 direct and indirect jobs. It takes from three and a half to five years until the energy effectively runs through the cable.

This long timeframe is the nature of the business. An energy transmission line crosses hundreds of kilometers of different properties, requires environmental licensing, right-of-way, towers erected one by one, and substations at both ends. According to CNN Brazil, the completion deadlines for the works range from 42 to 60 months. It is not a project that can be sped up with money; it is a project that depends on time.

The discount that marked the transmission auction

The discount offered by the winners was the strongest data of the auction. According to Revista OE, also on March 27, 2026, the overall average of the auction was a discount of 50.68%, with lot 3 reaching ranges from 52.30% to 56.20% in the sublots and lot 4 registering the lowest discount, of 37.89%. Half of the expected value simply will not be charged.

And the competition behind these discounts was intense. According to CNN Brazil, ten bidders participated in the auction, competing for the five offered lots, with lot 3 concentrating the largest investment of 1.38 billion reais, followed by lot 5, with 1.01 billion reais. The more companies at the table, the greater the discount that results.

It’s worth explaining what this discount means in practice. The regulator sets a maximum revenue that the company can receive for operating the power transmission line, and the competitors bid by offering to receive less than this ceiling. According to Revista OE, the overall average discount of the auction was 50.68%. Since this revenue is covered by all consumers in the electricity bill, each point of discount is money that doesn’t come out of the pocket of those who pay the bill.

Why energy transmission matters so much

Brazil has a particular geographical problem. Energy is generated where there is wind, sun, river, or gas, almost always far from where it is consumed, and without a transmission line, the plant is useless. A wind farm in the interior of the Northeast or a hydroelectric plant in the North only supplies São Paulo if there is a cable connecting the two ends.

This is why the electricity sector treats energy transmission as a bottleneck. When there is a lack of lines, the plant is forced to stop generating even with resources available, which wastes clean energy and reduces the generator’s revenue. According to Revista OE, the deadline for completing the contracted works varies between three and five years. Each kilometer built is the capacity to channel generation that is currently stuck.

The auction numbers show the effort to unlock this. According to CNN Brazil, the 798 kilometers of transmission lines and the 2,150 megavolt-amperes contracted involve investments of approximately 3.3 billion reais and more than 8,498 direct and indirect jobs. It’s the electrical grid being extended to where generation has grown.

What the transmission auction means

In the end, the auction numbers show a sector capable of attracting private capital while charging consumers less. With an average discount of 50.69%, 3.3 billion reais in investment, 798 kilometers of new lines, 11 states served, and 8,498 jobs planned, Brazil’s energy transmission auction delivered a project with a discount. As long as there are ten companies competing for five lots, those who pay the electricity bill are grateful. Tell us in the comments: does a high-voltage transmission line pass near where you live?
