The Streets of the Paulista Capital Have Turned Into a Stage for an Unprecedented Technological Hunt. Equipped with Algorithms and Artificial Intelligence, Detran-SP is Now Targeting Vehicles that Accumulate Hundreds of Fines and Debts Far Above Their Market Value, in an Offensive That Promises to Change the Fight Against Traffic Violations.

The Detran-SP has initiated an innovative project that utilizes data analysis and artificial intelligence to track vehicles that accumulate a large number of violations and continue to circulate illegally.

The strategy aims to identify behavioral patterns among the most recurrent offenders and remove them from the streets with the support of the Military Police.

Extreme Cases Caught in the Capital

On Friday, September 5, the system indicated a blue Astra that was traveling through Pinheiros with 602 fines and a total of R$ 160.6 thousand in debts — an amount ten times higher than the vehicle’s market value.

The car, which had not been licensed for twelve years, was driven by a driver without a CNH and was seized in the western zone of the capital.

Other Millionaire Vehicles in Fines

The operation also recently removed a 2004/2005 Corsa that had accumulated 229 fines and R$ 123 thousand in liabilities, nearly six times its market value.

The day after the seizure of the Astra, another target of the project was collected: a 2014/2015 Chevrolet Montana with 434 fines, totaling R$ 101.6 thousand in debts, more than double the Fipe table value.

Like the others, the vehicle was also without licensing and was driven by an unlicensed driver.

Expansion to the Whole State

For now, the actions are concentrated in the Paulista capital, but Detran-SP’s plan is to institutionalize the project and expand it to the entire state.

Every three months, the list of “champions of violations” will be updated based on the survey of the most recurrent vehicles from the previous twelve months, strengthening the agency’s efforts in building a safer and more responsible traffic.

Debate About Future Use of Technology

For now, Detran-SP’s use of artificial intelligence is concentrated on extreme cases, involving vehicles with hundreds of fines and debts far above their market value.

However, the adoption of this technology raises questions about its future use: will the system eventually be applied to collect from smaller debtors, with few accumulated debts?
