Closure of Brazilian Ford Factories Causes Unemployment Among Former Employees

Ford is closing two factories immediately and a third at the end of the year, affecting around 5,000 Brazilian employees, the spokesperson said. This is part of the long-term restructuring plan of US $ 11 billion that began with former CEO Jim Hackett.

Ford’s Statement

“With over a century in South America and Brazil, we know that these are very difficult actions to take and many employees to be laid off, but necessary to create a healthy and sustainable business,” said Ford CEO Jim Farley in a statement.

“We are shifting to a lean and agile business model, ending production in some factories in Brazil, and serving customers with some of the best and most exciting vehicles in our global portfolio. We will also accelerate the delivery of connectivity, electrification, and autonomy benefits to our customers to efficiently meet the need for cleaner and safer vehicles in the future.”

And What About the Customers?

Ford will maintain its complete customer support operations with sales, service, spare parts, and warranty support in Brazil and South America. Ford will also keep its product development center in Bahia, its test field in Tatui, São Paulo, and its regional headquarters in São Paulo.

Ford will halt production at the Camaçari, Taubaté, and Troller factories this year, as the COVID-19 pandemic “amplifies the persistent idle capacity in the industry and the slow sales that have resulted in years of significant losses,” the company said.
