Ford continues its move toward electrification even as production timelines and plans change in Europe

Ford is moving forward with its plan to retire the gasoline-powered Ford Focus, even with the postponing your transition goal for fully electric fleet in Europe, now scheduled for 2035 instead of 2030 as initially planned, according to the Electrek website.

Production of the current Ford Focus with a gasoline engine is expected to end next year, as previously announced by the company. Ford does not intend to extend production of the Focus, even if there is an extension of the deadline set by the European Union for the elimination of greenhouse gas emissions.

Ford's restructuring plan in Europe

Kieran Cahill, vice president of production, Ford of Europe, said: “We have made our plans and there is no possibility of extending production of the Focus.” The Ford plant in Saarlouis, Germany, where the Focus is produced, will continue to operate after the end of production of the model, scheduled for November 2025. About 1.000 of the current 4.500 employees will remain at the factory, while the rest will be relocated to other Ford locations. The factory is expected to remain in operation until at least the end of 2032.

Despite adjustments to electrification plans, Ford reaffirmed its commitment to the transition to more affordable electric vehicles. The company is already increasing production of electric vehicles at other European factories, such as the new plant in Cologne, Germany, where Ford's first electric Explorer rolled out last week.

New Car is coming: Electric crossover and future prospects

Additionally, Ford is preparing to launch a new electric crossover, possibly called the electric Capri, based on Volkswagen's MEB platform, the same one used by the electric Explorer. Ford CEO Jim Farley recently emphasized the importance of this transition for the brand, especially given advances in the Chinese electric car market.
