Imagine a place so isolated that not even Google Maps can show everything that happens there. After decades of debate, in 2019, the International Court of Justice determined that the British occupation of the Chagos Islands was illegal and ordered that they be returned to Mauritius. However, even with the UK’s recent promise to return the archipelago, Diego Garcia remains an exception. The UK and the United States hold firm control over the military base, deemed vital for their global defense operations.
Although the British government has agreed to return the islands, Diego Garcia is still excluded from this negotiation. The military base, leased to the United States until 2036, is a non-negotiable point in the relationship between the two powers.
