Imagine a place so isolated that not even Google Maps can show everything that happens there. This small portion of land lost in the middle of the Indian Ocean has been, for more than 60 years, a stage for one of the greatest disputes between the United Kingdom and the USA. Later, with the defeat of Napoleon, the island came under British control in 1814. For many years, life went on peacefully, with the small local population living off fishing and agriculture.
However, with the Cold War in play and the desire to control strategic points on the planet, Diego Garcia attracted the attention of the United States and the United Kingdom. In 1966, the British signed a secret agreement with the Americans, allowing the construction of a military base on the island, marking the beginning of one of the biggest disputes between the UK and the USA for control of territories in the Indian Ocean.

After decades of debate, in 2019, the International Court of Justice determined that the British occupation of the Chagos Islands was illegal and ordered that they be returned to Mauritius. However, even with the UK’s recent promise to return the archipelago, Diego Garcia remains an exception. The UK and the United States hold firm control over the military base, deemed vital for their global defense operations.
Although the British government has agreed to return the islands, Diego Garcia is still excluded from this negotiation. The military base, leased to the United States until 2036, is a non-negotiable point in the relationship between the two powers.
