A white van with red diagonal stripes and a purple light bar came out from under a cover in Shibuya on a Tuesday afternoon, and the thing loaded in the back was not a gurney for a person but a rigid board sized for a machine with two legs
The vehicle is called the GMO Humanoid Ambulance, and it is a panel van dressed as the real thing. Video of the unveiling shows a Fiat badge on the grille, a magenta light bar on the roof and red diagonal stripes running down the flank.
GMO AI & Robotics Corporation, the robotics arm of GMO Internet Group, announced it on September 8, 2026, and put it into service this month. The company describes it as the first maintenance vehicle in Japan built only for humanoid robots.
What is actually loaded in the back
The interior is a workshop on wheels. The unveiling footage shows a yellow rescue board clipped to one wall, a rail and hook overhead, a laptop on a steel table, and an engineer bent over a white humanoid strapped flat to a stretcher, with a wall of wrenches behind his shoulder.

GMO says the van carries diagnostic equipment, major components, consumables, replacement parts and a spare humanoid unit. The engineers who ride along work out of the company’s Humanoid Lab in Shibuya, which doubles as the shop where the harder repairs get done.
The promise is one to two hours, day or night
One vehicle exists, and it sits at GMO’s headquarters in Shibuya. The company says it is building the system to reach a site anywhere in Tokyo’s 23 wards within one to two hours, including at night, according to the Sankei Shimbun.
That is a target the seller set, not a measured average, and the service is days old. GMO told Sankei it plans to open regional bases outside Tokyo within a few years if the demand shows up.
The 70,000 yen a month part
The call-out is only half the product. ITmedia reported a subscription at 70,000 yen a month that lets a customer have a broken robot swapped for a loaner on the spot, with up to a month and a half of loaner use a year included.
That works out to 840,000 yen a year, or roughly $5,350, our own conversion at the 156.885 yen to the dollar that Wise showed on September 20, 2026. The monthly figure lands near $446.
Who is allowed to call it
The ambulance answers for humanoids that GMO AI & Robotics deployed, not for any humanoid in the country, and the company decides each dispatch case by case depending on the state of the robot and who is free that day.

GMO resells and customizes hardware from Unitree, the Chinese maker whose G1 is the machine standing beside the van in the unveiling video. The service is therefore closer to a dealer’s roadside assistance plan than to a public emergency number.
The spare robot is the real product
Tomohiro Uchida, chief executive of GMO AIR, said the idea came from watching jobs stall while a damaged robot was carted off somewhere else for repair. “Learning from that experience, we came up with the idea of providing replacement humanoids,” he told Euronews.
Shota Takizawa, an engineer at the company, put the mechanics of it plainly in the same footage: the van brings the replacement humanoid to the site and swaps it for the damaged one. The shift keeps running while the broken unit rides back to Shibuya.
Why Japan is the country building this first
The labor math is the reason. The Recruit Works Institute projects Japan will be short about 3.41 million workers by 2030 and roughly 11 million by 2040, with the country’s labor supply shrinking around 12 percent between 2022 and 2040.
The pressure already shows in the monthly data. Japan’s job openings to applicants ratio stood at 1.18 in June 2026, according to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, meaning there were more posted jobs than there were people looking for one.
Japan already runs 450,500 robots nobody sends an ambulance to
Robots are not new here. Japan had 450,500 industrial robots in operation in 2024, a 3 percent rise and the second largest installed base on the planet, and a density of 446 units per 10,000 manufacturing workers, according to the International Federation of Robotics.
Those machines are bolted to factory floors and covered by service contracts with the makers that built them. A humanoid is different because it walks into a warehouse, an airport apron or a hotel lobby, which is exactly where a van can reach it and a crane cannot.
What a stopped machine costs on a real line
The figures explain why a call-out service for robots is not a novelty. Siemens put unplanned downtime in automotive manufacturing at up to $2.3 million an hour, about $600 a second, in its True Cost of Downtime 2024 study, with a median across sectors near $125,000 an hour.
Hold that against the subscription. A full year at 70,000 yen a month is about $5,350, which buys roughly eight seconds of a stopped car line at the Siemens automotive rate, in our own arithmetic. Nobody is claiming a humanoid replaces an auto line, but that is the price ceiling the industry is used to.
Where the humanoids are actually working
The most concrete deployment in Japan sits on the apron at Haneda. GMO AI & Robotics and JAL Ground Service began putting humanoids to work on baggage and cargo loading and cabin cleaning in May 2026, with the program planned to run through 2028.
That is ground handling, the corner of aviation squeezed hardest by inbound tourism arriving faster than the working age population grows. A robot that falls over on a cargo dolly is the exact scenario the van was built for.
One van, a city, and a very long map
GMO frames the ambulance as infrastructure rather than a gadget, and Uchida’s argument is that humanoids only take hold in society if somebody guarantees they keep moving. The company also sells the robots, which is worth keeping in view when reading its forecasts.
The forecasts it cites are large. GMO points to McKinsey’s estimate of a roughly $370 billion global robot market by 2040 and to Japan’s own AI Robotics Strategy target of more than a 30 percent share. For now the fleet is one van in Shibuya, and when the shift ends, the van still has to come back.
