The Smallest Toyota Car Is Now Sporty and Hybrid: Will the Brazilian Yaris Cross Follow the Same Path?
Imagine a mini Toyota car, just over 3.7 meters long, capable of traveling 26 km on a liter of fuel, with a crossover style and a sporty touch inspired by the GR line. That’s exactly what the new Aygo X has just become in Europe. And meanwhile, here in Brazil, anticipation is growing: will the national Yaris Cross also get a GR-Sport version?
Let’s understand everything that has changed in the smallest Toyota sold on the Old Continent and what we can expect for Brazil.
Aygo X: A Mini Crossover That Became Hybrid and Sporty
The Aygo X is now the most popular mini Toyota car in Europe outside the category of small kei cars from Japan. It competes in an interesting niche: the urban premium segment, which has lost important competitors like VW up!, Skoda Citigo, and SEAT Mii.

After decades out of the spotlight, Citroën is preparing to bring back the legendary 2CV as a low-cost electric vehicle, betting on the revival of one of the most popular cars in history and aiming to enter the race for affordable compact cars.
-
The 2026 electric Vitara arrives in Brazil and proves that Suzuki is not leaving: 4×4 traction, 184 hp, 61 kWh LFP battery, 293 km range, R$ 259,000, and a trunk capacity of 224 L.

Hyundai has unveiled the Boulder, a square SUV with a body-on-frame design, 37-inch mud tires, and carriage-style doors that seems to be made to take on the Ford Bronco and the Scout Traveller in the United States.
-
The Toyota Hilux is R$ 75.5 thousand cheaper and bets on the 2.8 turbodiesel engine with up to 204 hp and 50.9 kgfm to catch up with the VW Saveiro, which leads with 4,472 sales.
Launched in 2022 with a crossover look, the Aygo X has just undergone a deep redesign for the 2025 line. The big change? It abandons the manual transmission and is now only sold with an automatic transmission. Additionally, the former 1.0 naturally aspirated engine has been replaced by a modern 1.5, the same as the European Yaris, delivering 115 hp. This represents a considerable leap of 43 hp compared to the previous model.
According to official data from Toyota Europe, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h decreased from a sluggish 14.9 seconds to a respectable 9.8 seconds. And there’s more: the Aygo X has become the only full hybrid in its category, with an impressive average fuel consumption of 26.3 km/l.
Transforming Such a Small Car into a Hybrid
Transforming such a small car into a hybrid required innovative solutions. To accommodate the electrical system, the front end was lengthened by 76 mm. But the most interesting trick is under the floor: for the first time in a Toyota, the battery cells were installed in two side-by-side packages under the rear seats. This longitudinal solution contrasts with the traditional layout of larger models, which have more space to integrate the batteries.
Even with the new hybrid set and the auxiliary battery under the trunk floor, cargo volume remains a good 231 liters. Toyota also reinforced acoustic insulation, including thicker glass in the higher versions, ensuring a much quieter driving experience.
GR Sport: The Sporty Touch Arrives at the Mini Toyota
Another noteworthy novelty is the introduction of the GR Sport trim, inspired by the brand’s sporty line. There was no increase in power, but the focus here was on dynamic behavior.
Toyota adjusted the calibration of the electric steering for more direct responses and revised the coil springs and shock absorbers. The result, according to the brand, is a car with more precise and fun handling.
Visually, the Aygo X GR Sport features exclusive details: a new grille, renewed headlights, a redesigned hood, and a series of distinctive interior finishes.
Respectable Standard Equipment
Despite being a mini Toyota car, the Aygo X does not fall short when it comes to technology and comfort. Among the highlights of the new lineup are:
- Wireless Smartphone Charger
- Electrically Folding Side Mirrors
- Panasonic Air Purification System
- Dual USB-C Ports
- Remote Updates via OTA
- 7-inch Digital Display on the Dashboard
- Electronic Parking Brake
In the safety package, the Aygo X comes with a complete set of assistants, including automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning.
Sales of the updated model will begin in Europe later this year.
And the Brazilian Yaris Cross, Produced at the Sorocaba Plant, Will It Have GR-Sport?
While Europe receives the revamped Aygo X, Brazil is preparing for an equally important launch: the new Yaris Cross, which is expected to arrive here by the end of 2025.
The compact utility vehicle will replace the current Yaris hatch and sedan as Toyota’s entry point in the country. The model will be based on the version sold in Thailand, as shown in several spy shots.
The national Yaris Cross will be produced at the Sorocaba plant (SP), which has already undergone renovations to increase its production capacity, as confirmed by Rafael Chang, president of Toyota Brasil. According to him, “production is already scheduled to start later this year,” and demand for the model is already causing waiting lists in markets like Argentina.
Modern Platform and Flex Hybrid Engine Confirmed
The Yaris Cross has the following dimensions: 4,310 mm in length, 1,770 mm in width, 1,615 mm in height, and 2,620 mm in wheelbase. It uses the DNGA platform, a more accessible variant of the TNGA, developed by Daihatsu.
Engine options include a naturally aspirated 1.5 with 106 hp and 14 kgfm for the entry-level versions and a hybrid system that combines an 80 hp combustion engine with a 90 hp electric motor. In Brazil, the hybrid will be flex, which should further enhance its appeal.
For the Joy of Brazilians, Everything Indicates That the Brazilian Yaris Cross Will Also Have a GR-Sport Version
Although it has not been officially confirmed yet, everything indicates that the Brazilian Yaris Cross will also have a GR-Sport version. This would follow Toyota’s trend in the country, where models like Corolla, Corolla Cross, and Hilux already offer this package with sporty visuals and dynamic adjustments.
As in the Aygo X GR Sport, the proposal for the version will not be radical performance but rather a distinctive look and more refined handling, a formula that has won a loyal audience.
The Success of the Mini Toyota Car
Toyota has been quite strategic in combining hybrid solutions with sporty versions in various segments. The success of the mini Toyota car, the Aygo X, in Europe, and the high expectations for the Yaris Cross in Brazil reinforce this trend.
The Brazilian market is increasingly receptive to hybrids and models with a sporty touch without sacrificing efficiency. If the Yaris Cross follows this path, as everything indicates, the brand should replicate the success it has already been enjoying in other markets.
