Through the CTR, Company Guarantees Proper Disposal of 100% of the Waste Generated in the Production Process and Reiterates Commitment to Environmental Responsibility
Atlantic Nickel, a Brazilian company that produces and exports sulfide nickel in the municipality of Itagibá, Bahia, has just inaugurated the new Waste Sorting Center (CTR) of the Santa Rita Mine, a project completed after five months of intense work, with an investment of R$ 3 million, and solidifies another important pillar in the execution of environmental policies prioritized by the company. The CTR, now with a total area of 1,506 m², aims to receive all material resulting from operational and administrative processes, performing specific sorting to ensure that 100% of the waste produced within the Santa Rita Mine receives the most appropriate final destination, in accordance with environmental regulations and without risks of environmental degradation. Atlantic Nickel already had a Waste Sorting Center, whose operation is now transferred to the new space, which enters into operation with state-of-the-art structure and specialized technology devices.

Organic waste from the kitchen that supplies the cafeterias also goes to the CTR, where equipment called “composters” transform food scraps into organic compost. Later, this compost, a type of natural fertilizer, is used in biodiversity preservation actions and reforestation of the Atlantic Forest surrounding the Santa Rita Mine. In the entire year of 2021, the project achieved the production of 4.7 tons of organic compost from food waste generated.
Guided by its ongoing commitment to environmental protection, last year, the company also allocated 92% of the total non-organic waste produced within the Santa Rita Mine for recycling. The other 8% of the waste, classified as non-recyclable, is also directed to a final destination in accordance with the best available practices, including coprocessing and subsequent transformation into energy.
The company achieves these rates as a result of the effective collaboration of its workers, both employees and contractors, who are great agents in maintaining practices for the proper disposal of any waste, whether from production or daily administrative activities. At the Santa Rita Mine, all circulation areas have explanatory signage and containers for the separation of paper, metal, plastic, glass, organic and non-organic waste. In this way, the company consolidates a strong organizational culture of environmental awareness, aligned with its commitment to promote socioeconomic development without compromising future generations.
About Atlantic Nickel
The only producer of sulfide nickel in the country, Atlantic Nickel has been operating since October 2019 in the extraction of the mineral fundamental for the manufacture of electric vehicle batteries. More than 2,500 direct jobs have been generated by the business, and R$ 151 million injected into purchases and contracts with suppliers in Bahia from 2018 to 2020.
The company’s projection is to double its production capacity, with the start of underground operations at the Santa Rita Mine expected for 2028, which will extend the mine’s lifespan from 8 to 34 years (7 years of open-pit mine + 27 years of underground mine). According to the Preliminary Economic Assessment, about US$ 355 million is expected to be invested in the first five years of this new phase.
Moreover, Atlantic Nickel is already celebrating the recent discovery of a new deposit with significant nickel resource potential just 26 km away, and in the same geological belt from which the Santa Rita Mine already operates.
