New Job Opportunities May Arrive in 2021 for the Civil Construction Industry, Says Caterpillar CEO

Business leaders in civil construction, such as the CEO of Caterpillar, project that 2021 will be a year of significant sector growth, continuing the trend that surprised the economy during the pandemic and generating new job opportunities.

“The pandemic had a somewhat positive bias for civil construction because people ended up reflecting on the way they live and that it is possible to make an upgrade,” said Diego Villar, president of Moura Dubeux construction company, to Exame magazine. He goes further by envisioning that “2021 will be one of the best years for the real estate market and new job opportunities.”

Civil Construction Companies Are Optimistic for 2021

Another entity that is quite optimistic about 2021 is the management of Caterpillar, a giant in the civil construction machine sector. The company forecasts a strong recovery in civil construction, primarily driven by private sector projects and many new job opportunities.

“We do not anticipate major government projects, but in the private sector, we should see several projects being executed across the country and many new job opportunities,” states Odair Renosto, president of Caterpillar Brazil, also in an interview with Exame.

The First Half of 2021 Will Be Essential for Generating Job Opportunities, Says Caterpillar CEO

According to the Construction Industry Survey from December, business owners in the sector have positive expectations for the next six months, which should bring not only job opportunities but also investment opportunities for entrepreneurs. The survey results indicate an increase in the purchase of inputs and the generation of new job openings.

The outlook is that the Brazilian economy will close 2020 with a decline of 4.41% in GDP. The expected retraction for construction this year is 2.8%, since, despite a strong recovery in the second half, it was not possible to eliminate the losses from the beginning of the pandemic. For 2021, the expectations for the country are positive: a growth of 3.5% is anticipated for the Brazilian economy.

According to projections made by the Brazilian Chamber of Construction Industry (CBIC), construction is expected to grow by 4% in its GDP, which would be the largest expansion of the sector since 2013 (4.5%).

Shortage

The risk to this performance is the shortage. “With this GDP, around 150,000 new job opportunities would be opened. We are optimistic, but cautious,” said the entity’s president, José Carlos Martins.

From the perspective of construction entrepreneurs, according to a survey conducted by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) with support from CBIC, the main problem they faced in the 3rd quarter of the year was the lack or high cost of raw materials.

According to the INCC-Materials and Equipment, calculated by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV), the price increase from January to November was 17.72%, the highest since the post-real period. Some inputs recorded increases of over 50% in the same period.
