German Company Develops Electric Car Platform With Wheel Hub Motors And No Brakes. The Platform Will Provide The Vehicle With 96% Efficiency And Promises To Revolutionize The Automotive Industry

Although electric motors are much more efficient than internal combustion engines, there are still measures that can be taken to reduce energy waste. Seeking to minimize waste, the German company DeepDrive created a platform for electric cars that features motors installed within the wheel hubs. The company, based in Munich, has designed a system that makes the use of brakes unnecessary, relying solely on energy recovery to bring the vehicle to a stop. The project is pioneering in the automotive industry and will be showcased at the upcoming IAA Mobility.

New Platform Promises To Achieve 96% Efficiency For Electric Cars And Revolutionize The Automotive Industry

According to the German company, around 30% of the energy used in an electric car can be lost due to heat. With this figure, in a medium-sized electric car with a 70 kWh battery, there is a range loss of more than 100 km and an additional cost for energy acquisition, during the car’s lifetime, of at least €3,000 (R$ 18,000 in direct conversion).

According to the German company, the new platform that will revolutionize the automotive industry will achieve 96% efficiency and also a 20% reduction in production costs, due to better highly standardized production processes and improved resource management.

Additionally, the new platform will save at least 30 kg compared to an equivalent platform with traditional architecture, due to the lack of a braking system, which reduces unsprung mass.

New Electric Car Without Brakes Could Achieve Up To 800 Km Of Range

The overall greater efficiency of the platform, which will revolutionize the automotive industry, will also allow for more affordable batteries than those using cobalt or nickel.

The company also states that, with sodium-ion and lithium phosphate cells, the platform will be capable of achieving a range of up to 600 km. However, if a set of conventional batteries with a higher energy density and a capacity of 100 kWh is used, the average range could be 800 km.

New Platform Comes In Various Sizes

The company explained that it not only wants to sell electric motors but is also looking for automotive industry partners willing to purchase the entire platform to design their own zero-emission electric car without brakes.

Due to the platform being completely flat and modular, there is greater freedom regarding size and body shape. According to DeepDrive, the platform is available in four sizes:

  • XS, for mini-vans and light quadricycles, with a range of 350 km, maximum speed of 45 to 80 km, and a power of 40 horsepower;
  • S: for small urban vans, urban cars, and compacts, with a range of 450 km, power of 200 horsepower, and maximum speed of 160 km/h;
  • M: for medium-sized and compact cars, with a range of 600 km and up to 350 horsepower, and a maximum speed of 160 km/h;
  • L: for large commercial vehicles, with a range of 700 km and the same performance as medium-sized vehicles.
