On the Last Friday, April 28, 2023, Ford Completed the Sale of Its Former Plant Located in Taubaté.

São José Desenvolvimento Imobiliário is the new owner of the property with 830,000 m² and announced that the area will be allocated for the industrial activities of the Vicunha-CSN group, through an agreement made between CSN and São José. Although the transaction value has not been disclosed, the company confirmed that the sale has been completed.

Despite this, the situation of the plant located in Camaçari has not been resolved. The transaction for this other plant has been under negotiation with the Chinese company BYD for almost a year and has not yet been completed.

Although early in March 2023, information leaked suggesting that the transaction was already closed, Ford issued a statement denying the fact. Expectations increased when the Minister of Labor, Luiz Marinho, and the Governor of the State of Bahia, Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT), used their social media to post optimistic messages about the resumption of activities in Camaçari.

This Situation Was Highlighted Even by the Delegation of the President of the Republic during a Recent Visit to China

However, sources involved in the negotiations emphasize that the situation is no longer a price dispute. According to the press, the parties have already reached a balance on the value, but the additional demands from the Chinese are complicating the final agreement. It remains to be seen what the outcome of these negotiations will be and what the future of the Camaçari plant will hold.

Since January 2021, Ford’s exit from Brazil has involved a saga with several stages. Currently, the multinational maintains its vehicle sales area and a research engineering center with local activities for automotive technology export. The sale of the Taubaté plant and the open situation of the Camaçari plant affect not only Ford, but the entire production chain behind the automotive industry.

The prospects for factory workers are filled with uncertainties regarding their jobs. Meanwhile, business owners related to the sector are trying to cope with the market instability created by the constant changes in the industrial policy implemented by the company.

The Automotive Industry Has a Significant Weight in Brazil’s GDP, and Ford’s Exit from the Country Contributes to a Landscape of Economic Uncertainties Regarding the Future of This Important Sector of the Economy

The closure of factories has direct impacts on tax revenue, the job market, and the overall production chain. It is essential that solutions are found as soon as possible to ensure stability and strengthen the Brazilian economy.

It is important to highlight that, currently, many companies are increasingly seeking national suppliers and are investing in new technologies aimed at sustainability and innovation, which could boost the national market and help to navigate these challenges. Ford is expected to communicate the next steps regarding the Camaçari plant soon, fostering possible new perspectives for the automotive sector in the country.
