Normal Procedure on Any Production Platform, Including Petrobras Units, Gas Flaring Occurs When It Is Not Possible to Process It for Safety Reasons or Excess

The CPG received a video about a supposed Petrobras platform on fire, the Cherne-2, a fixed production platform that incorporates the Congro, Cherne, and Malhado fields in the Campos Basin. Perhaps due to never having seen it, the oil worker who recorded the video did not know that the huge smoke plume that appeared over the unit was a common maneuver. Watch the video below:

Recent News About Petrobras

Read What the State Company Says About Gas Flaring: ” The flaring of part of the natural gas produced is inherent to the oil industry and occurs for safety reasons (flare pilot of production facilities), at the beginning of platform operations (during the commissioning phase of its compression plant and export pipeline) and during maintenance shutdowns, as well as in temporary emergency situations or operational limitations.” taken from the article: Gas Flaring: Letter to Globo.

It is worth noting that this flaring is not limited to offshore production units. These natural gas flares are necessary in production systems both offshore and onshore, as well as in processing plants and refineries.

According to our investigation, it was just an excess of associated gas burning, and due to the volume, it ended up forming that thick, dark cloud.
