The contract, signed at the Indo Defence 2025 fair, represents the first international commitment of the KAAN program and marks a strategic advance for both nations.

In addition to the sale of the aircraft, the package includes technology transfer and local production in Indonesia, consolidating military collaboration between the countries. The agreement was signed with direct support from Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prabowo Subianto and forecasts deliveries between 2028 and 2034.

KAAN Fighter

The KAAN, also known as TF-X or MMU, is a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet with twin engines, designed to replace the F-16 in the Turkish Air Force. Its first flight occurred in February 2024. The program is managed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), with support from the national industry.

Since its exclusion from the F-35 program in 2019, Turkey has heavily invested in autonomous defense solutions. The KAAN is central to this strategy, featuring an AESA radar, national armament, and the capability to operate in air-to-air, air-to-ground, and electronic warfare missions.

Strategic Implications for Southeast Asia

With this contract, Indonesia and Turkey Seal US$ 10 Billion Agreement that could reposition the military balance in Southeast Asia. Indonesia seeks to replace its aging fleet and reduce dependence on Western suppliers. The partnership with Turkey also opens doors for future industrial collaborations.

According to the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, the first units are expected to arrive starting in 2028, and the complete fleet will be operational by 2034. The expectation is that Indonesian engineers will be trained in Turkey, ensuring local capacity building and access to the global military aviation supply chain.

In your opinion, does this agreement change the geopolitical landscape of Asia and the Middle East?
