New Details About The Future Container Ship Fleet Of MSC Have Been Revealed, Even With The Company’s Efforts At Keeping It Secret. Ordered From The CIMC Group Of China, The Natural Gas Transport Vessels Will Be Delivered Between 2025 And 2026.
Although Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is keeping key project information confidential, new updates about its future fleet of container ships are gradually being released. The natural gas transport ships, ordered from CIMC Group, will be equipped with the largest fuel storage tanks in the international shipping market.
MSC’s New Container Ship Fleet Project Will Feature The Largest Natural Gas Storage Tanks And A 5% Reduction In Fuel Consumption During Operations
The shipping company MSC has been trying to keep as much information as possible about its new container vessels project planned for the coming years secret.
However, new updates about some details of the ship fleet have been released to the global market.

A 4,500-ton frigate with just over 100 crew members, state-of-the-art radar, and cruise missiles is being touted as the new standard of naval warfare in the 21st century.
The project is being led by Zhoushan Changhong, a joint venture between Jiangsu Xin Chang Jiang Group, a privately owned company, and China International Marine Containers Group (CIMC Group).
The Chinese company confirmed the order for the new fleet, which will be used in the international transportation of natural gas.
According to industry information, the design of the vessels was handled by CIMC Ocean Engineering Design and Research Institute (CIMC ORIC). The expected delivery of MSC’s container ships is between 2025 and 2026.
As for the technical details of the ships, they will be 335 meters long, 45.6 meters wide, and will have a molded depth of 25.0 meters, as well as a draft of 12.5 meters.
Additionally, the vessels designed by CIMC Group will have the largest natural gas storage tanks in the current fuel market.
This will allow the new fleet of container ships to perform transportation operations from China to Europe or from China to the USA using gas.
As a result, there will be a reduction of up to 5% in fuel consumption during operations, contributing to minimizing the environmental impacts of the operations.
CIMC Group Highlights That The New Fleet Of Container Ships Will Feature Cutting-Edge Technology To Enhance Natural Gas Operations
According to information from MSC’s project, the new ships will have an Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) 40% lower than the baseline for emissions set by the IMO.
As a result, they will operate within a healthy carbon emission range by 2040, ahead of current vessels in the market.
Yin Xunbin, general manager of CIMC ORIC, further emphasized that the container ship design will include cutting-edge technologies to enhance operations.
The main feature of the ships is dual-fuel propulsion, which allows them to operate with both LNG and conventional fuel.
According to the executive, MSC insisted on faster speeds and lower fuel consumption in the operational transport of natural gas.
Thus, it was necessary to develop an even more modern design while remaining committed to reducing pollutant emissions.
They have also been equipped with a range of energy-saving and safety features.
Now, MSC will continue working with CIMC Group on developing its new natural gas container ships.
