The ANTT (National Agency of Land Transport) announced, on Wednesday (February 22, 2021), the approval of the request for the construction of a high-speed bullet train that will connect the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. This decision was published in the Official Gazette of the Union.
The company responsible for the construction of a bullet train and operation of this project is TAV Brasil Empresa Brasileira de Trens de Alta Velocidade, which was founded in February of this year. The partners of this company are Marcos Joaquim Goncalves Alves, João Henrique Sigaud Cordeiro Guerra, and the companies Global Ace and Infra S.A Investimentos e Serviços, having a total share capital of R$ 100 thousand.
This idea, which emerged in 2007, aims to reduce travel time between the two Brazilian capitals, anticipating that when fully operational, it can reach maximum speeds of 350 km/h, making it possible to cover the distance between the two cities in just 90 minutes.
The project will include all safety standards necessary for this type of transport. In addition, the company responsible for the construction of the bullet train will work under a licensing model. This way, it will be possible to ensure that the train will feature the best available technological equipment to safely transport passengers throughout the journey between the two main Brazilian cities.

One of TAV Brasil Empresa Brasileira de Trens de Alta Velocidade’s main concerns is to stimulate local economic growth in the areas through which the railway will pass. To this end, partnerships will be developed with local governments to promote urban and regional development.

New Railway Authorization Approved In Brazil
The Brazilian Senate recently approved a bill that will allow the construction of railway lines without the need for an auction. This measure, initially conceived to enable small lines or reactivate abandoned ones, was sent to Congress via a provisional measure by the then Minister of Infrastructure under Jair Bolsonaro, Tarcísio de Freitas.
With this new railway authorization, interested companies in constructing new sections will have more ease and speed in obtaining the necessary permits. Furthermore, the fees charged for these concessions will be lower than those anticipated in a traditional auction.
However, the government has been encouraging investment in modern technologies to improve the Brazilian railway infrastructure. New control systems have been installed on existing lines, while studies have been conducted to identify possible improvements to existing tracks and new alternative routes.
This measure is a big step forward in modernizing Brazilian infrastructure. The project aims to promote competitiveness among companies developing railway works, in addition to creating new opportunities for cities that will receive the new sections and railway lines.
Minister Tarcísio de Freitas commented on the project: “With this railway authorization, we aim to ensure the future of railway transportation in Brazil and provide greater safety for people who use this type of transport daily”. He also highlighted that concessionaires will have specific rights to manage their areas, while the fees charged will remain within the limits established by the federal government.
The new authorization brings significant benefits for users and companies in the sector. Now, more companies can participate in the construction of new railway lines, ensuring greater competitiveness in the market and lower prices for passengers. Thus, with the modernization of Brazilian railway transport and the construction of a bullet train, passengers will have a much better experience during their journey.
