New Tugboat From Detroit Shipyard Will Have a Pulling Capacity of 80 Tons and 6% Reduction in Emissions of Gases
It was launched yesterday, Tuesday, 14, by the Detroit Shipyard, its new hybrid mechanical tugboat and the first ever built in the Americas. The plan of the Detroit Shipyard is to reduce gas emissions by up to 6% compared to a conventional tug, according to the Portos e Navios website.
The construction of the tugboat was funded by the FMM (Maritime Merchant Fund) and also had the BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) as a transferring agent.
Having a pulling capacity of 80 tons, the tugboat from Detroit Shipyard also features propellers provided by Schottel and a hybrid system from MTU. According to the project’s manager at the shipyard, Marcelo Rampelotti, the hybrid system installed on the tugboat has an additional series on the shaft that connects the propellers on both sides.

According to Marcelo: “This allows, in navigation, during short movements or in some specific maneuvers, such as external fire-fighting, the vessel to keep one of the main engines off, thus saving fuel consumption and operational hours of the engines, as well as reducing emissions”.
More Tugboats Built by Detroit Shipyard
In the year 2022, Detroit Brasil also launched in the market, at the International Tug and Salvage Convention (ITS) in Istanbul (Turkey), the line of tugboats called ‘Detroit Green Line’, which features solutions focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The shipyard also highlights that the Starnav Lynx is the first tugboat delivered and also the first of the Green Line. According to the manager, this series has 4 vessels, with 3 being prepared for the installation of the hybrid system and 1 will leave the shipyard with a 100% operational system. The tugboat had as its “godmother” Declivone Alencar Antunes Dias.
