With the Introduction of the Fully Electric i5 Model, the Next Generation of the BMW 5 Series Will Receive the Most Radical Update in Its History with the New BMW i5.
BMW is on track to develop its first fully electric 5 Series with the i5, and we can expect a full reveal in 2023 of the new BMW i5.
The sedan will face the Mercedes EQE and the Tesla Model S, but the i5 Touring will have few competitors, with the budget-focused MG5 EV and the more premium Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo being the only EVs available.
Meet the New BMW i5
As we saw, the new BMW i5 sedan is not very different from the Series 5 Touring with the internal combustion engine. A blank grille, along with a “electric vehicle” sticker, has been a blessing for the powertrain of this test vehicle. This test car still uses a lot of camouflage, but we can already see some important design details. The kidney grille will be more restrained than that of the i4, and there will be only a single set of headlights, instead of a dual setup like the new Series 7 and iX feature.

Less than a Tera TSI, up to 710 km of range and charging in 9 minutes: the new BYD Song Ultra expands the Chinese brand’s bet on increasingly faster, more technological, and competitively priced electric SUVs.

BYD Dolphin 2027 gains more power, increases in size, changes interior, and abandons controversial feature to face new competition in Brazil.

With a 1.0 engine producing 75 hp and costing less than R$ 70,000, Fiat’s car returns to the podium as the cheapest in the country; a temporary promotion for the 2026 Like version reduces the price of the Fiat Mobi.

With a mild hybrid system of 48 V, 176 hp and a price of R$ 175,990 in the Sahara version, the new Jeep Renegade changes mostly on the inside, improves slightly in fuel consumption, and remains almost the same car.
On the side of the new BMW i5, we can see the door handles integrated into the doors that help improve the aerodynamic drag coefficient and the new design of the seven-spoke alloy wheels. A panel on the rear pillar covers the area where BMW’s classic “Hofmeister kink” design feature is located.
Like the i4, the charging hatch will be located on the rear quarter panel on the driver’s side. Besides the extra quality of finish at the rear, it looks largely like the sedan with the same taillights.
The new BMW i5 will share the same modular CLAR foundations of the current 5 Series with the combustion engine. We expect the range of fully electric powertrains for the i5 to be similar to that offered in the i4, which also uses the CLAR platform.
The next 5 Series, with the codename G60, will be one of the last new models from BMW before its Neue Klasse generation of cars begins to launch in 2025, likely led by a fully electric replacement for the 3 Series and the X5 SUV.
We should see a basic i5 eDrive40 with an 80.7 kWh battery and a rear-mounted electric motor producing around 335 horsepower and 430 Newton-meters of torque. An M50 model is also likely, with around 469 hp and 730 Nm of torque. In the i4, there is a boost mode among the more powerful options, producing up to 537bhp and 795Nm of torque for 10 seconds, and it is well delivered.
Additionally, the rival M60 variant with the M5 could borrow the powertrain from the M60 iX. This will include a 105kWh battery and two electric motors producing 611bhp and 1,100Nm of torque. In the iX, this power allows a 0-62 mph time of 3.8 seconds. The i5 has much less weight to handle, so we expect a sprint time close to 3 seconds.
As for the range, the i4 achieves a maximum of 365 miles, and we can see something similar, despite the larger size of the i5, depending on the improvements BMW has made to battery efficiency since the introduction of the i4. BMW’s new iX is capable of rapid charging at 195kW, so the i5 should at least offer this charging speed. This could mean that its battery will charge from 10 to 80% in 39 minutes.
Like other BMW EVs, an 11kWh onboard charger is expected to arrive in the i5. The BMW Group has confirmed that it will launch 25 new electrified models across its brand lineup – about half of which will phase out combustion power. We saw the iX1 join the X1 this year, while the new electric i7 joins the flagship 7 Series sedan.
