For Years, Elon Musk Has Announced Plans to Implant Neurochips in Humans. With the Updated Timeline, Experiments Are Expected to Begin in 2022
The co-founder of Neuralink, a neurotechnology commercial company, billionaire Elon Musk has been announcing plans to implant neurochips in humans for years. The initial target date was to happen in 2020. However, with Elon Musk’s timeline officially updated, the new forecast is that the first experiments will begin in 2022.

To date, Neuralink has successfully implanted neurochips in pigs during initial tests. Following that, experiments were successfully performed on monkeys. The next step is to implant coins-sized neurochips in humans.
When Neurochips Will Be Installed in Human Brains
On Monday, December 6, Elon Musk gave an interview to The Wall Street Journal, during which he was asked about Neuralink’s goal to install neurochips in humans next year.

“We hope to have this in our first humans — who will be people with severe spinal cord injuries, like quadriplegics — next year, pending FDA approval,” Elon Musk stated.
All stages of the experiment to install neurochips in humans will require prior approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the federal agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
On Tuesday, December 7, Elon Musk reiterated that the deadline for the experiment to be conducted in humans is next year. Additionally, the billionaire recalled the potential benefits of neurochip technology while responding to a user who was eager for assistance from new technologies.
Purpose of the Neurochip
The neurochip that will be implanted in the brains of humans functions to simultaneously record and stimulate brain activity. The device will be intended for medical applications, for example, to treat severe spinal cord injuries and neurological disorders.
“Replacing defective/missing neurons with circuits is the right way to think about it. Many problems can be solved just by linking signals between existing neurons,” said Elon Musk in defense of the technique’s importance.
About Neuralink
Neuralink is a team of exceptionally talented individuals, one of whom is its founder Elon Musk. The company is creating the future of brain interfaces: building devices that will help people with paralysis and inventing new technologies that will expand abilities, community, and the world.
The development of neural interfaces is an interdisciplinary challenge. Neuralink seeks to hire a wide range of people with diverse engineering, scientific, and operational knowledge.
