In 1992, a simple Fiat Elba station wagon became one of the most emblematic symbols of a political scandal that ended with the resignation of the first president elected by direct vote after the redemocratization of Brazil. Decades later, the question remains: what happened to Collor’s Fiat Elba?

What happened to the Fiat Elba: In the early 1990s, Brazil was still experiencing the enthusiasm of the democratic resurgence after decades of military dictatorship. In 1989, the country held its first direct presidential election in nearly thirty years, and Fernando Collor de Mello was elected president of the Republic. Two years later, in 1992, the same president would see his government crumble under the weight of corruption allegations involving his name and that of his former campaign treasurer Paulo César Farias, the notorious PC Farias. At the center of this scandal, an unlikely piece: a Fiat Elba Weekend 1.5, 1991 model.

According to investigations, the station wagon was acquired with funds from phantom accounts controlled by PC Farias, in the president’s own name. The purchase was considered one of the main pieces of evidence of the diversion of public funds for personal use, and the Fiat Elba became material evidence in the impeachment process.

What Happened to the Fiat Elba: From Urban Car to Evidence of a Historical Scandal

The Fiat Elba, launched by the Italian automaker in Brazil in the late 1980s, was the station wagon version of the popular Uno. Versatile, practical, and with good interior space, the Elba quickly became an appealing option for Brazilian families and small business owners. Its production took place between 1985 and 1996.

The model involved in the Collor case was a Fiat Elba Weekend 1.5, in dark color, originally registered with a yellow license plate (standard of the time). With a powerful engine for the category and a robust appearance, the car was considered modern by the standards of the time — although it was far from being a luxury vehicle.

Collor himself, in a conversation with followers on his Twitter account, commented on the car:

Just because it was a popular car, the use of public money to purchase it generated even more outrage among the population. After all, it was a symbol of everyday life transformed into evidence of abuse of power.

What Happened to Collor’s Fiat Elba?

After Collor’s resignation in 1992, the fate of the car became a mystery. The vehicle, then in the possession of the former president, had its registration canceled by Fernando Collor himself at the Detran, which means it is no longer authorized to circulate on public roads. This indicates that the car may have been sent to scrap, or remains stored in a private location, not authorized for use.

Photos that circulated on the internet a few years ago showed what appeared to be the Fiat Elba already quite deteriorated, with worn paint and a gray license plate, parked in an unidentified location. The press sought the former senator’s advisory to clarify the exact whereabouts of the vehicle but never received an official response.

This disappearance only reinforces the legendary status of the Elba in the Brazilian political imagination: a car that “vanished” just as it caused the downfall of a president — unexpectedly and silently.

The PC Farias Scandal and the Path to Impeachment

The episode involving the Fiat Elba was just the tip of a much larger iceberg. Paulo César Farias, known as PC Farias, operated a scheme to illegally raise funds in the president’s name. Several companies made deposits into phantom accounts controlled by him, in exchange for favors and tax benefits.

The allegations came to light in 1992, through newspaper reports and investigations by the CPI. The purchase of the Fiat Elba with money from these accounts was one of the central elements of the formal accusation, as it directly linked Collor’s name to the use of illicit resources.

In September 1992, the Chamber of Deputies approved, by 441 votes in favor and only 38 against, the opening of the impeachment process. Collor resigned days later, but the Senate maintained the trial and declared him ineligible for eight years.

Was Collor Acquitted?

Yes. Despite the political condemnation, the Supreme Federal Court acquitted Fernando Collor twice: in 1994 and again in 2014. The Court claimed lack of evidence to convict him of diverting public resources.

However, the political damage was already done. The president’s name became forever associated with the Fiat Elba episode and the figure of PC Farias — who would later be found dead under mysterious circumstances in 1996.

What is the Current Value of a Fiat Elba?

According to the Fipe Table, a 1991 Fiat Elba Weekend 1.5, identical to Collor’s case, has an average value of R$ 6,198 in 2025. This, of course, if it is in good condition, which is rare after more than 30 years.

This symbolic value contrasts sharply with the historical weight of the model. Few vehicles in Brazil have been as talked about — and as politically decisive — as the Fiat Elba of Collor.

The End of the Fiat Elba: A Silent Exit from the Streets

Produced in Brazil between 1985 and 1996, the Fiat Elba ceased production for several reasons:

  • Fiat began to invest in more modern models with family appeal, such as the Palio Weekend.
  • The design of the Elba became outdated compared to new competitors.
  • Changes in consumer preferences and regulations regarding safety and emissions.

Despite its solid performance, interior space, and mechanical durability, the end of the Fiat Elba was inevitable in light of the transformations in the Brazilian automotive sector in the 1990s.

Even with the passing decades, the Fiat Elba remains a symbol of the collapse of a government. The car is constantly remembered in reports, history books, cartoons, and debates about political ethics in Brazil.

In a country where political scandals are recurrent, it is curious that such a simple car has become the icon of one of the most significant episodes in republican history. The case of the Elba was different: there was no overpriced cost, luxury, or large sums involved — but the breach of public trust, indeed.

Cultural Impact: From Satire to Political Study

The impact of the Fiat Elba was so strong that it transcended the boundaries of politics. The station wagon became:

  • A theme for cartoons in the country’s major newspapers;
  • A reference in comedic programs;
  • A chapter in books on contemporary Brazilian history;
  • A topic of study in journalism, law, and political science colleges.

The Elba became synonymous with political scandal, just as the triplex in Guarujá in more recent times. It shows how seemingly mundane objects can become decisive material evidence.

Where is the Fiat Elba Today?

The question remains unanswered officially. There are records at the Detran that the cancellation was requested, which means that legally, Collor’s Elba can no longer circulate. However, there is no confirmation whether it was dismantled, sold, or remains stored somewhere in the “Casa da Dinda,” the ex-president’s mansion in Brasília.

Meanwhile, the mystique surrounding the car grows. Perhaps the Elba has indeed turned into scrap. Or maybe it is hidden, preserved by someone who recognized its historical value. What is known is that the Elba left a legacy that goes beyond politics or the automotive industry: it shaped the destiny of a nation.
