Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station, a Brazilian base operated by the Navy, receives support from Petrobras through the Brazilian Antarctic Program (Proantar)

Brazilian researchers at the Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station, where, in a partnership between the Navy and Petrobras, research is carried out in the areas of the environment, meteorology, biodiversity and chemistry, have a somewhat unusual routine. Selection process opened by a civil construction company demands elementary and high school professionals

Imagine leaving the office and facing the largest desert in the world, with more than 14 million km², with only penguins and elephant seals as neighbors. This is the routine of Brazilian researchers at the Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station.

An immense frozen desert, larger than the territories of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru and Bolivia combined. The driest, coldest and highest continent in the world, with temperatures reaching -93ºC.

Antarctica holds immense potential for scientific discoveries. For this reason, since the end of the XNUMXth century, a true journey for knowledge has been undertaken towards the south pole, today the base of researchers from twenty-nine countries, including Brazil.

PROANTAR, the Brazilian Antarctic Program, started in 1982 and, since 1984, maintains the Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station (EACF) on the continent, a research base operated by the Brazilian Navy.

We know that scientific progress does not occur without collaboration, so we have contributed with the energy that moves the ships, helicopters and planes of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) deployed to transport researchers on their missions through this inhospitable territory.

The characteristics of the region demand Petrobras fuels adapted to low temperatures and able to maintain their properties without alterations until about minus 40 degrees. Produced at the Duque de Caxias Refinery (REDUC) and at the Gabriel Passos Refinery (REGAP), these fuels also guarantee the proper functioning of the station's electricity generators.

About the Brazilian station in Antarctica

The Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station has 4,5 square meters, 17 laboratories and can accommodate up to 64 people. With the current cooperation agreement between Petrobras and the Navy, which foresees investments of around R$ 400 million over the next five years, research, missions of researchers and teams to the region, purchase of equipment for ships and laboratories, development of special fuels for the Antarctic environment, among other activities. Our partnership with Proantar has existed since 1987.
