The Port of Itaguaí Will Receive Another Infrastructure Project by PortosRio That Aims to Improve Cargo Flow in the Region and Increase Ship Traffic.

The project at the Port of Itaguaí aims to build a new terminal for the transportation and storage of bulk solid minerals at installation ITG 02. In the first year of the contract, the estimated investment for the Port of Itaguaí is around 3 billion reais, and the annual processing capacity is 20 million tons. On the 23rd, the National Agency of Waterway Transportation (ANTAQ) decided to open a public consultation, which is the first authorization from the regulatory agency in 2023.

Construction Project at the Port of Itaguaí Has Been Approved

The 539th ordinary meeting of the ANTAQ Board approved the preparatory documents for the bidding of the port installation. The directors agreed that the study supporting the notice complied with ANTAQ Regulatory Resolution No. 85/2022 and approved the opening of a public consultation to obtain contributions and proposals for improvement of the relevant technical and legal documents for the implementation of ITG-02.

The timing of submissions and the scheduling of public hearings will be determined by the agency at a later date. The future enterprise at the Port of Itaguaí, which will occupy an area of 348,937 square meters, is considered closely related to Brazilian foreign trade, as it will provide the necessary infrastructure to export products from the Iron Quadrangle and solidify the position of the Port of Itaguaí as one of the main port complexes in the country. Besides generating economic and social benefits over 25 years of operation, it can also be renewed within the same period.

Regarding the socioeconomic impact of the project, previous studies by PortosRio indicated that in the initial years of implementation, more than 2,800 indirect jobs would be generated, and in operation, 250 direct jobs and 1,800 indirect jobs. The estimates indicate that the proposed project will significantly increase the revenue of the Municipality of Itaguaí with the payment of the Service Tax (ISS), amounting to R$ 1.2 billion over the contract period.

Police Seizes About 400kg of Cocaine at the Port of Itaguaí

In early February, about 400 kilograms of cocaine were seized in a container at the port of Itaguaí, Rio de Janeiro. The seizure was part of a joint operation by the Anti-Drug Police Station (DRE) of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, the Federal Police, and auditors from the Federal Revenue Service.

According to the investigation, this batch of drugs weighing 387 kilograms was to be sandwiched in a coffee truck and sent to Spain. Due to the nature of international drug trafficking, the material was forwarded to the Federal Police at Praça Mauá. The investigation continues to identify the owner of the cargo and who was hired to transport the drug abroad.
