As of last Friday (1), the memorandum signed between the Brazilian federal government and the government of Australia for the grant of a visa package for work and holidays has come into effect. The package includes over 500 visas for young people aged 18 to 30 who wish to have an experience in Australia and even be permanently hired by a company there. This memorandum was signed on March 31, 2022, but only came into effect from July.

According to statistics pointed out by the federal government, Brazil already makes up the ninth largest contingent of students migrating to Australia for study or work. Australia Faces Labor Shortages And Seeks Immigrants To Meet Job Demands

Like the developed countries of Europe and North America, Australia is facing a serious labor shortage problem, both qualified and unqualified. In early 2022, chicken distribution in the country was affected due to workers’ isolation caused by the new wave of Covid-19.

Under the regime that has been in place for years, to spend time in Australia, you need to present a prior tie with an employer or an educational institution, such as universities, for example. However, with this memorandum, you can stay in the country for up to 12 months without this proof of tie and can take the risk of looking for a new job there for permanent hiring.

To obtain a visa under this model established in the memorandum, according to the data in the document, you need to ensure that:

• you primarily intend to spend holidays in Australia for a period of up to 12 (twelve) months;
• you are at least 18 (eighteen) years old but have not turned 31 (thirty-one) at the time of the visa application;
• you have not previously participated in the “Work and Holiday” program of Australia;
• you will not be accompanied by dependent children;
• you have a valid passport;
• you have a travel ticket or sufficient funds to purchase such a ticket;
• you have sufficient funds for personal maintenance during the initial stay in Australian territory, for the purposes of the bilateral program regarding the “Work and Holiday” visa;
• you meet the health and character requirements as specified by Australian law;
• you have successfully completed at least 2 (two) years of higher education;
• you have a minimum English proficiency level assessed as functional.

The memorandum also establishes that employment for services should not exceed a period of 6 months. However, if you manage to get a job for a longer duration, you can apply for permanent employment and visa to live in Australia, which is a somewhat more complicated process.
