At the Bottom of the Waters of Ilhabela, on the Coast of São Paulo, Lies a Secret That Has Intrigued and Fascinated Adventurers, Historians, and Treasure Hunters for Over a Century. A Spanish Ship That Sank in 1916, Named “Príncipe de Astúrias”, Is Known as the “Brazilian Titanic”.

However, what truly keeps interest alive is not just the tragedy, but the possibility that 11 tons of gold may be hidden in the depths. What really happened? And will this treasure ever be found?

According to historians, the luxurious transatlantic Spanish vessel sank to the bottom of the sea in Ilhabela, taking with it hundreds of lives and, allegedly, a fortune in gold.

The mystery surrounding this shipwreck goes beyond the mere sinking, fueled by theories suggesting that the gold on board was meant to finance the Mexican Revolution or to pay for Argentine wheat during World War I. However, to this day, no official documentation confirms these claims.

The Shipwreck of Príncipe de Astúrias

The “Príncipe de Astúrias” departed from Barcelona bound for Buenos Aires, but met its tragic end in Brazilian waters. On board was a treasure that, according to speculation, never reached its destination.

Captain José Lotina, who commanded the ship, was never found, leading to various conspiracy theories about what really happened that fateful night.

Despite numerous expeditions over the years, the 11 tons of gold remains a mystery. Some believe that the treasure was removed from the ship before the sinking, possibly between the islands of Búzios and Vitória, explaining the sudden change of course that led to the collision with the Ilhabela rocks. However, this hypothesis has never been proven, leaving the mystery even more intriguing.

The Fascination with the Lost Treasure

The shipwreck of the “Príncipe de Astúrias”, the “Brazilian Titanic”, is not just a tragedy, but also one of the greatest mysteries in Brazilian maritime history.

The search for the gold has turned Ilhabela into a place of great interest not only for tourists but also for adventurers and treasure hunters, all in search of clues that may lead to Brazil’s greatest lost treasure.

If the gold is really there, it remains one of the greatest submerged enigmas in Brazilian history. Meanwhile, the fascination for this mystery remains alive, challenging those who seek to uncover the secrets hidden in the depths of the ocean.
