The Economic Production of the State of Rio Reached Its Highest Point Since 2000, With a Trade Flow of US$ 70 Billion in 2022, According to Rio Exporta 2022.

The trade balance of Rio de Janeiro, according to the Rio Exporta 2022 report from the Federation of Industries of Rio de Janeiro (Firjan), reveals a surplus of US$ 18.9 billion, resulting from record exports and imports.

In 2022, Rio accumulated a trade surplus, driven by a 33% increase in exports (totaling US$ 44.3 billion) and a 13% increase in imports (reaching US$ 25.4 billion) compared to the previous year. Contributing factors to this growth include the easing of pandemic-related restrictions and the upward trend of international oil prices.

 The capital city had a flow of US$ 30.5 billion in its trade, a 32% increase compared to the previous year, with exports growing by 56%.  Crude oil sales totaled US$ 17 billion, marking a substantial increase of 70% compared to 2021, with China as the main destination, generating US$ 7.9 billion.

The rest of the State of Rio accounted for 54% of the state’s exports (US$ 26 billion) and 66% of imports (US$ 16.7 billion). According to a special edition of the Rio Exporta Bulletin, over 70% of external sales were crude oil, while the highlight for imports was aeronautical equipment, including the purchase of engines and turbines.

The Performance by Region Reported by Rio Exporta 2022

In Northern Fluminense, exports grew by 19% last year, totaling US$ 2.5 billion, reflecting a 56% increase in international sales from São João da Barra (US$ 2 billion). India remains the main exporter in the region, with annual crude oil sales (US$ 2.4 billion) growing by 26% and accounting for 97% of total exports.

In the Duque de Caxias region, crude oil exports (US$ 15.7 billion) from the municipality of Baixada Fluminense stood out among commercial flows of US$ 23.6 billion, an 18% increase compared to 2021. Nova Iguaçu and the Baixada neighborhood also continued to stand out in the export of bombs, grenades, and other ammunition (US$ 16.5 million), at an average price of US$ 79.39 per kilogram.

In the center-north region of the state, the textile industry recorded a 69% increase in exports of bras, girdles, and other intimate fashion products compared to 2021. International sales of ethanol grew by 91% (US$ 801 thousand), with carioca cachaça being the main export product of the region.

In Eastern Fluminense, commercial flows grew by 46% (US$ 1.2 billion). The main destination for exports is Malaysia. Niterói stands out as the largest exporting city, with a 140% increase in international sales compared to 2021. Exports of chains, links, and their parts also grew by more than 1,000 percent.

Trade in the mountainous region was US$ 6.1 billion, 30% more than in 2021, and nearly 100% of exports from the region come from Petrópolis, with turbojets and other gas turbines being the largest sales. In southern Rio de Janeiro, however, the trade flow increased by 22% (totaling US$ 5.6 billion). The sale of flat steel or steel to the United States and the export of passenger cars, with Argentina as the main partner, stand out.
