Second Edition of the Petrobras Socio-Environmental Program Selected Seven Young People, Aged 18 to 25, to Act as Environmental Agents. They Will Receive a Monthly Stipend of R$ 900

Petrobras announced in a relevant fact, on Friday (02/11), that it renewed its partnership with the Association of Sea Protectors for the execution of the second phase of the Educ project and for a multimillion-dollar investment in the coming years in socio-environmental education actions, such as training environmental agents (aged between 18 to 25 years), implementing selective waste collection in voluntary households, environmental education activities in local schools, among others, around the Duque de Caxias Refinery (Reduc), the Garrão Dam, and the Termorio Power Plant.

According to Petrobras, the investment of R$ 3 million will benefit the communities of Campo Elíseos, Saraiva, Bom Retiro, Parque Marilândia, Parque Império, Jardim Primavera, Saracuruna, and Xerém, in Rio de Janeiro.

The Brazilian oil giant aims to promote community leadership in proposing solutions to identified socio-environmental problems, raising awareness among adolescents, young people, leaders, educators, and residents. In addition, the state-owned project develops actions for awareness regarding safety and the risks of unauthorized use of refinery areas, avoiding dangerous actions like releasing balloons and burning trash in pipeline passage areas. “The goal is to empower communities so they can play an active role in their own socio-economic development,” says Rafaela Guedes Monteiro, Executive Manager of Social Responsibility at Petrobras.

With Support from Petrobras, Educ Project Teaches How to Prepare a Resume, How to Behave in an Interview, and Assists with Job Placements Through Partnerships

Petrobras has been supporting Educ for three years, through the Petrobras Socio-Environmental Program, which trained young people from these communities as environmental agents to act as multipliers in their regions, aiming for the adoption of new habits and environmental practices in their communities’ daily lives. “We want education to be a tool for change in the lives of these young people. To show that they can be leaders at home and in their neighborhoods, being multipliers of ideas and attitudes,” emphasizes Flavio Rabelo, coordinator of the second stage of Educ. The project also operates in social education, offering workshops for entering the job market. Rabelo explains that these are young people without prospects, and the project tries to show that it is possible to change this reality and teaches, for example, how to prepare a resume, how to behave in an interview, and assists with job placements through partnerships.

In this new phase, the project will be expanded to three more communities, in addition to those already covered in the initial phase: Parque Império, Saracuruna, and Xerém. A new diagnosis will be conducted and aims, based on previous results, to identify new demands and track the evolution of the outcomes of the actions carried out. “The diagnosis will be an important evaluation tool for the project’s development and for the changes in these communities over the past few years, including the impact of the pandemic on families,” says Flavio. In addition, to kick off this second edition, the selection of seven young people, aged 18 to 25, was conducted to act as environmental agents. They will receive a monthly stipend of R$ 900, with a weekly workload of 20 hours.

Another activity that will be expanded by the project is community selective waste collection. The project created adapted tricycles that travel through the streets collecting recyclable materials. Additionally, awareness actions and recyclable waste collection are conducted in local schools. In the first phase of the project, more than a ton was collected. The collected materials were donated to local waste collector cooperatives.
