BNDES Will Finance the Construction of 7 Out of 14 Wind Farms in the São Vitor Wind Power Complex. In Addition to Creating Thousands of Jobs for Bahia, the Wind Farms Could Generate 235 MW of Power

Seven of the fourteen new wind farms will be built after financing from the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) at the São Vitor wind power complex, located in the municipalities of Xique-Xique, Itaguaçu da Bahia, and Gentio do Outro. Besides creating jobs, the wind farms will have the capacity to produce 235 MW of power and, when the entire project is completed, could generate up to 465 MW. The wind power complex in Bahia, when finished, could generate enough energy to meet the demand of 1 million households.

Construction of Wind Farms in Bahia Will Create 1,200 New Jobs

Another very relevant point regarding BNDES financing will be the creation of 1,200 direct jobs during the installation of the wind farms in Bahia, contributing to the quality of life and living conditions in the region.

According to data from the Brazilian Wind Energy Association (ABEEólica), the HDI of municipalities with projects like these has seen an average growth of 20% compared to others.

BNDES support will be granted to seven SPEs (Special Purpose Companies), controlled by Essentia Energia, a renewable energy platform from the infrastructure fund managed by Pátria Investimentos. The bank’s financing for the construction of the wind power units, which will create various jobs, will amount to up to R$ 655 million.

BNDES Financing Will Focus on Purchasing Wind Energy Equipment

The SPEs will install and operate seven wind farms: São Vitor 1, 3, 7, 11, 12, 13, and 14, out of the total that are part of the wind power complex in Bahia, about 550 km from the capital.

In addition to generating new jobs, the project, which is supported by BNDES, primarily focuses on the purchase of 38 wind turbines manufactured in the country.

A large part of BNDES financing will be directed towards acquiring these wind energy generation equipment, thus promoting the supply chain of the product in the country. The other expenses of the wind farm project are related to civil works, which will generate various jobs. The projection is that the wind farms will start operations for the sale of clean energy by the end of this year.

Bahia Is Second in Wind Energy Generation in the Country

Bahia is the second largest state in Brazil in terms of installed wind power capacity, in addition to the projects still under construction. The state has significant potential both near the coast and inland.

Currently, out of the 19 GW generated in the country, 17.5 GW come from the Northeast region. Bahia generates 5.4 GW, which significantly contributed to the country’s exit from the water scarcity that occurred last year. Furthermore, the state contributed to the energy security of the country and also to its supply in a clean, competitive, and renewable source. Bahia avoids the use of thermal power plants, thus reducing CO2 emissions and lowering costs for the end consumer.
