The State of Pará Will Be Benefited with a New Technology and Research Center from Alcoa and Ufopa, Which Will Invest R$ 2.3 Million in the Project, with the Acquisition of Cutting-Edge Equipment for the Development of New Solutions for the Mining Sector
The Federal University of Western Pará (Ufopa) and the Alcoa Foundation announced last Tuesday (04/19) the creation of the Technological Center in Geosciences and Applied Engineering, which will be based in the municipalities of Santarém and Juruti in the state of Pará. Thus, the university and the company will invest a total of R$ 2.3 million in the research and technology center focused on the mining sector.
Investments of R$ 2.3 Million in the Technology and Research Center for Mining in Pará Will Be Directed towards the Purchase of Equipment and Supplies for the Project
Mining in the state of Pará is one of the fastest-growing sectors, ensuring good economic growth for the region, and with the creation of the new technology and research center from Alcoa and Ufopa, the state will have the possibility to expand this activity even further in the area. Thus, the municipalities of Santarém and Juruti will host the center after the completion of the works.
Additionally, the investment of R$ 2.3 million from Ufopa in partnership with Alcoa will be allocated for the acquisition of supplies and state-of-the-art equipment for Geosciences laboratories, directly benefiting the courses of Geophysics and Geology in Santarém, as well as the Mining Engineering course in Juruti. This way, both segments will have the necessary equipment and tools to develop new solutions for the mining sector within the technology and research center.
At the end of the investment project, the following courses should benefit from the technology and research center: Geo-statistics Laboratory, Mine Planning and Simulation; Rock and Soil Mechanics Laboratory; Geo-chemistry and Hydro-geochemistry Laboratory; and Potential Methods Laboratory. Thus, the center will be the place for technological innovation within the mining segment and will allow the creation of essential projects for the sector’s development, as the university’s support in research is essential for this to happen.
Alcoa’s Technology and Research Center at Ufopa Is Expected to Be Delivered in 2023 and Will Foster New Solutions for the Mining Segment in the State
According to the partnership established between Ufopa and Alcoa for the distribution of investment in the construction of the center, the funds were delivered to the university in February 2022 and the projected completion of the project is by July 2023. Thus, Ufopa has already acquired part of the equipment and supplies necessary for the technology and research center, but is still waiting for the arrival of a significant portion of the tools.
The Institutional Relations Manager at Alcoa, José Haroldo Chaves Paula, commented on how the project to create the center by Ufopa was highly attractive to the company: “I was impressed with what was presented about the project, both the structure and the information, the transparency with which Ufopa is conducting this project. Our expectation is that these resources will indeed translate into benefits for the academic community, and that we will have quality professionals trained who can find positions in companies in the region with training acquired in Santarém, Juruti, and other municipalities where Ufopa is present.”
Finally, the executive concluded by saying that he hopes Alcoa’s investment in the technology and research center can benefit both the university and the mining sector in the state of Pará, as this is an essential activity for the region’s development.
