Urupema, The Coldest City In Brazil, Surprises With Trails, Parrot Flocks, And A Waterfall That Freezes On The Coldest Days Of The Year

High in the Serra Catarinense, the city of Urupema holds one of Brazil’s most curious natural phenomena: a waterfall that freezes during the coldest days of the year.

Known for recording the lowest temperatures in the country, the city has become a coveted destination for those who wish to experience the intense cold in Brazilian territory.

Extreme Cold And Unique Landscapes

Located more than 1,335 meters above sea level, Urupema stands out for its harsh climate. The city is often cited as the coldest in Brazil. In April of this year, thermometers registered -0.2 °C.

In previous winters, the central square has recorded -6 °C. These temperatures attract tourists fleeing the heat of large cities, seeking to intensely and safely experience the cold climate.

Even without facilities for sports like skiing or snowboarding, Urupema offers trails and walks through the snow.

Local guides organize routes that include explanations about the fauna and flora of the Serra Catarinense. Additionally, the city is excellent for photography enthusiasts, with landscapes covered in ice and mountains filled with araucarias.

Natural Attractions Of The Region

Urupema is surrounded by mountains, forests, and araucarias. These landscapes create the ideal setting for outdoor activities such as trekking on snow-covered trails and visiting the region’s waterfalls.

The local inns offer comfort and coziness, ideal for those seeking to rest after exploring the mountainous environment.

Between March and June, the Flocking of the Parrot-Charão also takes place. During this period, thousands of parrots gather in the araucarias to feed on the seeds.

This phenomenon attracts bird watchers and nature lovers from various parts of Brazil, making Urupema even more appealing.

The Famous Frozen Waterfall

The city’s main attraction, however, is the waterfall that freezes in the winter. Located on Morro das Torres, also known as Serra do Campo Novo, it is formed by two waterfalls that transform into true ice sculptures during the coldest days of the year.

The freezing occurs when the temperature falls below zero for long enough to turn the water into crystals. Icicles form along the fall, creating a rare landscape in Brazil, very similar to regions with extreme climates in the Northern Hemisphere.

How To Get To Urupema

The city is located about 200 km from Florianópolis and can be accessed via paved roads. This makes the car journey a practical alternative for those departing from the capital.

For those who prefer flying, the Regional Airport of Planalto Serrano is an option, although it offers fewer flight times compared to the larger airports in the state.

Unique Destination In Brazil

Urupema offers intense cold, winter landscapes, and rare natural phenomena. Whether for the trails, the flocks of parrots, or the frozen waterfall, the city has established itself as one of the most curious and enchanting destinations in Brazil.
